This is Path of Exile at its most fun from smrtsmith's blog

This is Path of Exile at its most fun: the screen jammed with skeletons, a necromancer at their back raising the fallen ones practically as fast because you can kill them. Fortunately, finding friends is simple, which makes trading simple, offering much more opportunities to seek out new gear.
The developers have chosen to POE Items forgo in-game currency, encouraging players to barter, while vendors just offer further customisation tools as rewards. Try to trade something in and you may be given identify scrolls or fragments towards an orb which will modify something you already own. Players are trading each of the time along with the only problem you have with it's keeping up with all the chat log.
Path of Exile is provided for free-to-play. I haven't mentioned this yet given it keeps slipping my thoughts, something I take like a very good sign. As usual, there's money for Buy POE Items being spent within the cosmetic aspect, buying your pet that can follow you about, modifying the look of the character or treating yourself to a whole new character animation. Players are going to pay to contribute custom content to your game and you will probably also find your wallet grants you the possiblity to increase your personal stash and character limit. The game doesn't press you on any one of these, nor would it be interested in asking that you pay for making your character better or to adopt shortcuts.
