In fact, with a few improvements, this could very well be a decent team over the next few seasons. I will go into more detail when digging into the Canucks Off-Season Game Plan, which will be coming earlier this year since they are part of the non-playoff contingent, there are some reasons to think this is a favourable situation for President of Hockey Operations Trevor Linden and whomever he selects to be the new general manager. WINNIPEG -- All-star defensive tackle Bryant Turner says it was a no-brainer for him to sign an extension with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers through 2016. Turner said Thursday there may be some morale building next season for a team that finished 3-15 in 2013, but he believes the Bombers have players who are committed to winning and the city has the best football fans in the world. As for new head coach Mike OShea, Turner says he isnt that familiar with him. But he called friend Swayze Waters in Toronto to get the lowdown and liked what he heard from the kicker about the former Argos special teams co-ordinator. Turner wasnt one of those players set to enter the free agent marketplace but he thanked the Bombers for wanting to keep him around. Winnipeg general manager Kyle Walters was also happy to keep Turner in the Bombers lineup. "Bryant has proven to be among the elite defensive lineman in our league, but its as much of his on field play as his off field characteristics that make him such valuable asset to our organization," he said in announcing the extension. Aaron Ramsey Wales Jersey. "His professionalism, work ethic, and overall desire to be a winner, along with his outstanding football ability, make this a great extension for us." Turner was tied for the team lead with seven sacks last season and added 14 tackles and two fumble recoveries en route to being named an East Division all-star for the second straight season. In 2012, he was named to the CFL all-star team after recording 20 tackles, six sacks and one fumble recovery. The Bombers also announced Thursday they had released kicker Sandro DeAngelis after only one season. DeAngelis, an eight-season CFL veteran and three time league all-star, was signed by the Bombers in August and took over kicking duties from Justin Palardy, who was released the same month. But his numbers were only slightly better with an average of 78.3 per cent on field goal attempts compared with Palardys 75 per cent. ' ' '
The Oilers will catch the NHLs best team without one of their best players tonight when Edmonton opens a home-and-home set with the Anaheim Ducks. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Australia . The Ducks announced on Tuesday that Corey Perry would miss 3-to-4 weeks with a knee injury that he suffered last week. The Oilers (7-16-5), tied with Carolina for the fewest points in the NHL at 19, slid back into the loss column after Tuesdays 5-2 loss at San Jose. Prior to that they beat the Sharks 2-1 to end their 11-game losing streak. Were getting enough chances to score three goals, coach Dallas Eakins said. If we continue with two, its not going to be a fun year. We have to put ourselves in a better spot. Jordan Eberle scored to give him a team-leading 18 points. However, hes had only two multi-point games this season, most recently in a win over the Hurricanes on Oct. 24. The right wing had two points against Anahaim on April 6, giving him nine in 10 meetings. David Perron has one point in each of the last five games after finding the net in the last two. The left wing also scored in the latest meeting with Anaheim after collecting five assists in the previous three. Anaheim (18-6-5) leads the league with 41 points after a four-game win streak in which each contest was decided by a goal. The margin for error may be even tighter after Perrys injury was announced. Perrys 14 goals lead the Ducks and he has 22 points in the last 23 games. Hes already missed six contests - including five last month due to the mumps - and Anaheim has gone 2-0-4 when he does not skate. The Ducks won their latest without him Sunday, getting a goal from Kyle Palmieri 53 seconds into overtime for a 4-3 victory at Winnipeg. Devante Smith-Pelly, who has 11 points, is expected to fill in for Perry at right wing on the top line. Corey isnt going to be replaced, but someone has to go in there and do his job, coach Bruce Boudreau told the teams official website. Smith-Pelly is a natural right winger even though he was doing well at center. He was the leading scorer in (AHL) Norfolk last year and he was a 50-goal scorer in junior. We know he has good hands. The same could be said of Ryan Getzlaf, who has 10 points in five games after collecting three assists against the Jets, including one on Palmieris winner. The center has 33 points in 30 career meetings with the Oilers. The Ducks are 17-3-1 in their last 21 against Edmonton and have won eight of 10 meetings at home after scoring three unanswered goals - two by Perry - in the third period of a 3-2 victory April 2. Anaheim, though, fell 4-2 at Edmonton four days later in a game that featured a combined 66 penalty minutes with six fighting majors and two game misconducts. Papelbon was suspended seven games and fined Monday for making a lewd gesture and then bumping West. The right-hander has insisted he wasnt making a vulgar motion toward fans as he walked off the field to boos after giving up four runs in the ninth inning of Philadelphias 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday. CEDAR PARK, Texas -- Toronto Marlies coach Steve Spott didnt let his team dwell on its first loss of the Calder Cup Playoffs, a 6-3 setback against the Texas Stars in Game 2 of the Western Conference final. Authentic Air Max Australia Shoes . The Marlies had won their first eight playoff games before Game 2, but the streak was derailed as Brett Ritchie and Scott Glennie each scored twice for Texas-- which fired 52 shots at Torontos net. "We turned the music on right away," Spott said referring to the teams post-game dressing room. "I went in and said a couple things about what we knew to do better. Then I said, when we leave here, Im a believer negativity is a wasted energy, and we turned the music on and we get back to work." The Stars have mustered 102 shots through two games and Toronto goalie Drew MacIntyre has stopped 95 of 101 shots. "We gave up, in my mind, three free goals," said Spott. "Weve got to be smarter and weve got to be tighter, the margin or error this time of year is slim." Glennies second goal gave Texas a two-goal lead with less than six minutes remaining in the third period after the teams traded five goals in the second. Spott said he felt Glennies goal, which came on a rebound after Mike Hedden drove hard to the net, ended Torontos comeback effort. "I thought we had some good push back when went to the third and then we gave up a soft goal," said Spott. "A coverage issue that we got beat on and then it ends up in the back of our netathose soft goals on some of those coverages, weve got to address." Chris Muellers fifth goal of the playoffs capped the barrage to give Texas a 4-3 lead 61 seconds before the second intermission. Before Muellers goal Glennie and Ritchie scored for Texas, while Josh Leivo and Peter Holland countered for the Marlies. Glennies goal, which gave the Stars a temporary 2-1 lead, was the first time the Marlies trailed since the regular season finale against the Rochester Americans - a streak of 512 minutes five seconds. "Not any disrespect to Texas, but I dont think we were on our game tonight and they pounced on that," Marlies defenceman T.J. Brennan said. "Theyre a good team and they took advantage of a lot things we didnt do (in the second period)." Earlier Toronto had opened the scoring on its first shot 4:22 into the game when Jerry DAmigo took advantage of a Texas turnover and beat Christopher Nilstorp over the right shoulder for his fifth goal of the playoffs. Travis Morin added an empty-net goal for the Stars while Nilstorp had 27 stops for the win. The 30-year-old Swedish netminder made his biggest stop with 13.5 seconds left in the second period on Stuart Percy. Percy had an apparent open net, but Nilstorp reached out and around a screen to make the glove save with his right hand. "Oh, (Nilstorp) played unbelievable tonight," Stars forward Mike Hedden said. "That save he made at the end of the second, I think it really lifted the guys on the bench and carried the momentum into the third period." Rookie Reid Boucher is impressing people with his ability to find the net. Jagrs 693rd career goal was his 122nd game-winner, passing Gordie Howe for most in NHL history, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 Wednesday night. Jagr also moved past Steve Yzerman and into sole possession of eighth place on the NHL goals list, one behind Mark Messier. The 41-year-old Jagrs first power-play goal of the season was his team-leading 12th. "Its an unbelievable feat, especially with the names on the list hes around and passing," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "Its an unbelievable accomplishment." Boucher netted his first in the NHL and Stephen Gionta scored a short-handed goal during his first shift for the Devils (14-15-6) after an 11-game absence because of an ankle injury. Damien Brunner scored in the second and Eric Gelinas tallied in the third for New Jersey. "He has instincts you cant teach," DeBoer said of Boucher. "I like a lot of things about him. He creates." Jagr made it 3-0 at 2:08 of the second period on the power play. Andy Greene had the puck against the boards when he slipped it out to Travis Zajac, who quickly fed Jagr in front for a shot into the far side of the net. Ottawas players called a closed-door meeting after the game. "Totally frustrated with our lack to string together another win," Ottawa captain Jason Spezza said. "We gave up a short-handed goal. Your power play is supposed to gain momentum for you. We gave up another pretty quick. Its tough to come back on the road, especially against a team like New Jersey." Martin Brodeur won his 10th game of the year by making 23 saves against Ottawa (14-16-6). Brunner scored a brilliant goal at 19:32 of the second to make it 4-1 for the Devils. The winger stripped Ottawa defenceman Jared Cowen of both the puck and his stick, then started left, deked right and came back left to slide the puck past Senator goalie Robin Lehner for his eighth goal. Wholesale Air Max Australia Free Shipping. "It might have looked like a slash, but he lets his stick go pretty easy," Bruner said. "I scored before like that, but not in the NHL. Its just instincts in front of the net and Im lucky it went in." On the final play of the second period, Ottawas Clark MacArthur was assessed a double-minor for boarding and roughing, giving the Devils a four-minute power play to start the third. MacArthur tried to draw Anton Volchenkov into a fight, but he resisted, straight-arming MacArthur to keep him away. The second period featured two sparkling saves by Brodeur, the first a glove save on a point-blank shot by Colin Greening and then another on a shot by Kyle Turris that he managed to cradle with his elbow and chest. Gionta made an immediate impact upon his return, scoring his first goal of the season in his first shift in the opening period. Volchenkov passed the puck to Adam Henrique for a 2-on-1 break. Henrique sent the puck to his right, where Gionta met it at the right circle for a shot that beat Lehner just 2:02 into the action. Boucher drew cheers of "Bou-cher!" when he scored his first goal at 12:08 of the first period to make it 2-0. Gelinas, a fellow rookie, blasted a slap shot that bounced off the boards to the right of the net and rebounded in front, where Boucher scooped it in. Ottawa got one back on a power play at 5:30 of the second when Greening redirected a slap shot by Eric Karlsson, which lifted up and over the shoulder of a screened Brodeur. Milan Michalek scored for Ottawa at 8:35 of the third, but Gelinas responded when he put in a shot off a pass from behind by Brunner at 9:20. NOTES: Gionta scored the first short-handed goal for New Jersey in 23 games. Henrique scored the previous short-handed goal on Oct. 29 vs. Tampa Bay . Gelinas picked up his 11th assist. He had come in tied for first in assists among NHL rookie defencemen. . Milan Michaleks power-play goal in the third period gave him eight goals in 15 games vs. the Devils. ' ' '

Wainwright allowed one hit, facing one batter over the minimum and very few hard-hit balls, and the St. Louis Cardinals ended an eight-game home run drought with long balls from Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta in a 5-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. "Ive had some times in my career where I felt like I had the stuff to do it," Wainwright said. "And today I had the stuff to do it," Wainwright said. Working on six days rest because of a rainout and day off, Wainwright (7-2) retired the first 11 batters before Paul Goldschmidt doubled off the wall in centre with two outs in the fourth. He matched his season best with nine strikeouts, fanning A.J. Pollock twice. "Goldschmidt, hes a very good hitter. I dont ever second-guess a pitch to Goldy out there," Wainwright said. "I threw a curveball middle of the plate 2-2 and he hit it off the wall. "Just take what you get." Peralta hit his team-leading ninth of the season in the sixth and added one of the Cardinals five doubles for a second RBI against Bronson Arroyo (4-3). Arroyo had been 3-0 with an 0.39 ERA in May and hadnt allowed a homer his last four starts. Arroyo gave up five runs in seven innings, all of the runs coming with two outs. "With two outs, they were tough. They just got it done," Arroyo said. "You just cant do that with Wainwright, hes so tough." Adams two-run shot in the first was the Cardinals first since May 9 when Peralta and Craig homered at Pittsburgh. It was their first in nine home games since Adams and Craig connected against the Brewers on April 30. The Cardinals entered with 23 homers, fewest in the National League and second fewest in the majors. "We didnt stress the first couple of months of the season the way our offence was," Adams said. "We know this is the offence were capable of every night." The one-hitter was a career best for Wainwright, who has thrown four two-hitters. He threw his second shutout of the season and the eighth of his career on a day Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said struggling closer Trevor Rosenthal would not be available. Rosenthal hhas two blown saves his last five appearances, the last coming when he pitched for the fourth straight game and took the loss against the Braves on Sunday. Fake NFL Jerseys Cheap. Former closer Jason Motte, activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game, warmed up in the ninth. Matheny said Motte would have made his season debut if Wainwright, who totalled 115 pitches with no walks, struggled. Wainwright said he lobbied Matheny for 12 pitches in the ninth and needed just nine to finish it. "Weve taken a couple from him when he was right there," Matheny said. "You dont often get those opportunities with a one-hit shutout, and he hadnt worked that hard." The Diamondbacks arrived minus new chief baseball officer Tony La Russa, who managed the Cardinals for 16 seasons and retired in 2011 after leading them to a second World Series title. Manager Kirk Gibson said before the game he didnt think it would have been a distraction. "Having him around, we look at as a positive," Gibson said. "I would say hes probably a little better at making decisions than I am." Pollock made an outstanding running catch in centre field a few steps from the wall to rob Molina of extra bases in the sixth. The Diamondbacks first three hitters had been 15 for 28 with four homers and 11 RBIs the previous three games. They fell victim to the Cardinals fifth straight starter to work at least seven innings. "He was good, but every pitcher for these guys is good," Goldschmidt said. "So there is never a night off," Goldschmidt said. HOUSTON -- Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon peered at the box score through his thick, black-framed eyeglasses after Friday nights game against the Houston Astros and kept repeating one word. Nike Air Force 1 Cheap Outlet . "Wow," Maddon said three times as he read off his pitchers strikeout totals. "I didnt realize we had that many." Alex Cobb had 11 of the Rays season high-tying 16 strikeouts, helping Tampa Bay to its first road win in almost a month, 6-1 over the Astros. Ben Zobrist, Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria drove in two runs apiece to break a 10-game road skid dating to May 16. Its just the third win in the last 17 games overall for the Rays, who have the worst record in the majors at 26-42. "This was more like were supposed to play, like we can play," Maddon said. "Got the hits, a couple hits when we needed it." The six runs they scored on Friday night matched the total number of runs theyd managed in their previous six games combined. Cobb (2-4) rebounded from his worst start of the year to allow three hits and one run with a season best in strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings. He gave up 10 hits and seven runs in a season-low 4 1-3 innings in his last outing. "You go borderline crazy after bad starts," Cobb said. "You start running your mechanics through your mind thousands of times and it keeps you up at night sometimes. It feels good to come out and see that your adjustments paid off." Joyce put the Rays up with his two-run double in the second and Zobrist, who finished with three hits, extended the lead to 4-1 with a triple that drove in two in the fifth inning. Longoria padded the lead with his bases-loaded two RBI single in the ninth. Houston rookie Jon Singleton continued his hot start, hitting his fourth homer in his 11th career game. He also homered on Thursday night. But the rest of the Astros couldnt get anything going as the team managed just three other hits and set a season high for strikeouts. Houston manager Bo Porter believes that some of his teams struggles on Friday night could be attributed to second baseman Jose Altuve sitting out. Altuve missed the game after being hit in the hand by a pitch on Thursday night and is day to day. "Any time you dont have Jose in your lineup, its going to hurt you from the standpoint of hes arguably our best player and leads Major League Baseball in hits for a reason," Porter said. "His presence will be missed any time hes not in the lineup." Collin McHugh (4-4) allowed five hits and four runs in five innings for the loss. James Loney reached on an error by shortstop Jonathan Villar to start the second inning before a double by Zobrist. Joyces double made it 2-0. Houstons Chris Carter singled with two outs in the second inning for his first hit that wasnt a homer since June 3. He had hit five straight homers in that span. Robbie Grossman walked after that but Cobb struck out Marwin Gonzalez to end the threat. Singleton sent Cobbs first pitch of the fourth inning opposite field into the Crawford Boxes in left field to cut the lead to 2-1. Cobb walked Matt Dominguez with one out in that inning before he got rolling, retiring the next eight, including striking out the side in the sixth inning. He also struck out the first three batters of the game. The Astros didnt get another hit until Dominguez singled to start the seventh. Carter followed by knocking a ball about 425 feet to straightaway centre field, but Jennings raced up the hill to grab it. Brad Boxberger replaced Cobb and struck out two batters in 2-3 innings and Joel Peralta fanned the side in the eighth. Jennings doubled with no outs in the fifth before Loney drew a two-out walk. Zobrist made it 4-1 with his triple to centre field which snapped an 0 for 26 streak with runners in scoring position. NOTES: Houston recalled RHP Josh Zeid from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned LHP Rudy Owens to the minor league team before the game. ... Tampa Bay RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) made his second rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Durham. He allowed six hits and four runs in 2 1-3 innings. A struggling national team, and likewise Canadian Major League Soccer franchises have tested the patience of the most ardent support of the game in this country. Tuesday night at our National Soccer Stadium in Toronto told a different story: attractive play, highlight reel goals and a winning experience. The Canadian men gave head coach Benito Floro a winning home debut in a 3-1 victory over CONCACAF rival Jamaica. It was all-around a fun night for the Canadian faithful. Baby steps and hints of progress. To say its been a rough two years for the Canadian Mens National Soccer team would be an understatement. The players, program and supporters all deserved a night as such. A 16-match winless streak dating back to the 8-1 World Cup qualifying humiliation to Honduras in San Pedro Sula in October 2012 has cast a cloud of negativity over our Mens Soccer program. A seemingly never-ending goalless streak, soul searching and an absolute loss in confidence in the players and leadership has made for an all-time difficult time for the program. A losing mentality can be contagious. But that negative demeanour was nowhere to be found at Canadian camp over the last week heading into Tuesdays win. There was passion, energy and excitement around the team getting back at it for a long-anticipated home date. It was the mens first home date in 2014, and just the third match on home soil in the last two years. The players are well aware of all the negative talk about the team, individually and as collective. They felt they had something to prove. The win wont take away the sting of 8-1 but sets the tone of where this group plans to go. Its time to move forward. The players can now do so with confidence and reasoned belief in their new manager. The move by the CSA to bring in Floro was a calculated one; a man of vast experience looking for a new opportunity. How the marriage would work out was up for great debate. Much work was to be done, and many questioned whether Floro would be up for it. The initial returns are showing steps in the right direction. His players are speaking of tactics and compartmentalization in approach: something entirely different than recent years when survival and keeping heads above the water always seemed the goal. The new coach won over the crowd by bringing on Canadian and local soccer legend Dwayne De Rosario, as well as defender Karl Ouimette, who lost his sister to cancer earlier this month, for second half appearances a€“ an appropriate touch and show of understanding by the manager. As for game-play, Floro has a clear vision how he wants his team to play. From attacking perspective, the initial returns speak to improvement. Its about making the most out of what he has. Canada will not win through individual ability: it must be a team approach, top-down. The intelligence and purpose of the Canadian attack against Jamaica was something unlike we have seen out of the Mens program for quite sometime. Canada may not be blessed with the natural goal-scorers of yester-year, but the team has pace. The ability to attack down the wings and move off the ball accordingly was refreshing. Tosaint Ricketts led the line well and looks a much more active player than in the past. His goal came off a mistake from goalkeeper Andre Blake, but the Canadian sstriker put himself in position to finish. Cheap Air Force Ones For Sale. It was a standout performance from the Israel-based player. Ricketts goal was the clincher after Canada scored three unanswered en route to victory. The other two goals were of the highest quality. Patrice Berniers corner finding David Edgar on the top of the 18, who volleyed home for a spectacular goal, rivaling Terry Dunfields wonder-strike against Ecuador in 2011. Marcel de Jong scored the other on a picture perfect free kick. Top goals, no matter what league or side youre watching worldwide. Atia Hutchinson remains the pulse of the team, outstanding again Tuesday night. The Besiktas player is a step above, and can be argued he could start for any CONCACAF nation. Hutchinson stands of evidence this country can still produce players of such high quality and deserves any and all the praise he gets. The team with speed around him takes advantage of his poise, composure and overall gifted ability to read the game. Hutchinson remains the centerpiece, and with Julian de Guzman, Patrice Bernier and the absent Will Johnson around him, make for a formidable middle of the park. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise was the play of goalkeeper Milan Borjan. Multiple top saves and intervention helped keep Canada in a position to win on home soil. His positioning was sound and shot-blocking ability was equal to the task. The defensive line was shaky in front of him and will need work growing as a unit. Toronto FCs Doneil Henry played at right-back and provided size and strength on the outside. Henry needs more polish at the position but was an interesting look for a player used to playing centre-half. Borjan is without a club at present time. He, along with de Guzman and Adam Straith need club teams as soon as possible. It need not matter the inexperience in the Jamaican team or the lack of preparation time for the visitors. Its the result that matters. Its time to turn the corner from the negative narrative to developing something positive. That only comes through results. Belief in Benito and better days ahead for the program is paramount looking ahead to the Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying in the not-so-distant future. Its important for the Mens program to gain prominence on the Canadian sports landscape. Canada has become a leader in the womens game in terms of development and fan support. The success of the womens game has been a boon for the Canadian Soccer Association. But the Mens program on a global scale will always be the primary, long-term moneymaker and the barometer by which a countrys soccer success will be judged. It was unfortunate young boys club teams didnt flock out Tuesday night as girls club teams do for the womens program. It all comes from perception. When the perception of the mens program turns to one of success, we can expect similar fandom to follow. So some headlines the night before tickets went on sale for the 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup is well-taken by the CSA and the Canadian soccer community. Its a big year for Canadian soccer and there is no reason the Mens team cant be part of the headlines. The goal is all programs finding on and off-field success. Progress should be embraced as it comes. Tuesday was just that. More baby steps. Gareth Wheeler can be reached at: @WheelerTSN gareth.wheeler@bellmedia.ca ' ' '
LOUISVILLE, Ky. Camiseta Aleix Vidal . -- Jameis Winston threw three touchdowns to offset a three-interception start and Dalvin Cook had two long scoring runs to help second-ranked Florida State rally for a 42-31 victory over Louisville on Thursday night. Florida State overcame a 21-0 deficit for its 24th straight victory, with Cook giving the Seminoles the lead for good with a 38-yard run with 3:46 remaining. Out of sorts and on the verge of having its College Football Playoff prospects damaged, the Seminoles (8-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 2 CFP) recovered behind their Heisman Trophy quarterback and Cook, who had a 40-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. All of Winstons TD passes were big. He hit Travis Rudolph for 68 yards, Ermon Lane for 47, and Freddie Stevenson for the 35-yard clincher with 2:11 remaining. Winston was 25 of 48 for 401 yards. More important for the Seminoles was maintaining their national championship hopes on a night that Louisville (6-3, 4-3, No. 25 CFP) nearly took them away twice. The presence of Muhammad Ali was fitting in a game that the Cardinals initially dominated with a smashmouth approach that provided a 21-point first-half lead and knocked the Seminoles on the ropes. Michael Dyer had TD runs of 4 and 12 yards and Gerald Christian caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Will Gardner. Florida State began its comeback just before halftime when Winston, shaking off two interceptions that Louisville turned into 14 points, led the Seminoles 78 yards on a drive that ended weird touchdown when Nick OLeary recovered Karlos Williams fumble in the end zone. The intermission gave Winston and Florida State time to regroup, though not before his third interception and second by Louisville safety Gerod Holliman. Ironically, Winstons biggest play came after the pickoff as he came up and stripped Holliman of the ball, which Travis Rudolph recovered at the Florida State 40. The Seminoles turned it over on downs but Winston found Rudolph wide open down the middle between two defenders for a 68-yard TD strike that cut it to 24-14 with 9:51 left in the quarter. Florida States swagger was back, and Cook turned it into a 40-yard touchdown run nearly 4 minutes later to bring the Seminoles within a field goal. Winstons TD pass to Lane with 12:48 left provided Florida States first lead and the game became a slugfest from there as Dyer answered for Louisville with a 1-yard TD run with 9:20 left. The Seminoles took charge from there with Cooks TD run and Stevensons pass from Winston.Camiseta Messi Barcelona . And former Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson certainly knows his pain. Radim Vrbata had the lone shootout goal for Phoenix, 7-1-1 in its last nine games. Pirri tied the score 4-all 3 minutes into the third, and 4 seconds after a Chicago power play had elapsed. He connected on a midair deflection of Brent Seabrooks drive from the top of the circle. Brandon Saad, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa also scored in regulation for the Blackhawks, who extended their point streak to eight games (7-0-1). Chicago fired a season-high 52 shots through overtime at Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Phoenix defenceman Michael Stone scored two goals for the first time in his career as the Coyotes overcame an early two-goal deficit to earn a point. Shane Doan and Lauri Korpikoski also scored for Phoenix. At 13-4-3, the Coyotes are off to their best start since 1998-99 when they were 15-3-2 after 20 games. Smith made 48 saves and Chicagos Corey Crawford had 26 in a wide-open, back-and-forth game. The 52 shots allowed by the Coyotes through overtime also were a season high. Smith entered having faced an NHL-high 555 shots. Phoenix defenceman Zbynek Michalek left after five shifts in the first period with a lower-body injury. The Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 6:22, but the Coyotes came back to tie it 2-all after the first period. Saad opened the scoring 2:37 in when he popped in a rebound with Smith down on the ice and a scrum in the crease. Sharp made it 2-0 at 6:22 with a power-play goal, on a rising shot fired from tthe top of the slot and through a screen. Camiseta Nelson Semedo. The 23-year-old Stone cut it to 2-1 just 41 seconds later when his shot from the right point deflected off Pirris stick and past Crawford. Doans power-play goal, chipped in from the right side of the net with 5:56 left in the first, tied it at 2. Keith Yandles shot from the point missed the net, caromed off the back boards and straight to Doan. Hossa put Chicago back ahead 3-2 at 5:05 of the second when he drove to the net unchecked and scored on a rebound of his own shot from left wing. Then Korpikoski and Stone scored 2:11 apart late in the second to put Phoenix ahead for the first time, 4-3. From the edge of the crease, Korpikoski wrapped in a rebound of Radim Vrbatas shot with 5:05 left in the period to knot it at 3. Stones second goal, on a high drive from the top of the left circle, sailed past Crawford on the stick side and put the Coyotes in front. After Pirri scored to tie it at 4, the Blackhawks took control and outshot the Coyotes 17-6 in the third. Smith stopped Hossa from point-blank range with a minute left in regulation. Chicago dominated the overtime and outshot Phoenix 3-0 NOTES: The Blackhawks recalled 20-year-old forward Alex Broadhurst from Rockford of the AHL and placed C Michael Handzus on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 25. SALVADOR, Brazil -- Tim Krul came on as a substitute in the final minute of extra time and then saved two penalties in a 4-3 shootout victory over Costa Rica on Saturday, giving the Netherlands a spot in the World Cup semifinals. Byron Murphy Jersey . Krul saved spot kicks from Costa Rica captain Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana after the match had finished 0-0. "We had a lot of chances but it didnt go in," Krul said on Dutch television. "Then I come in, stop two penalties and here we are." In another stroke of tactical genius at this years World Cup, Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal pulled Jasper Cillessen moments after the Ajax goalkeeper had saved a shot from Marcos Urena in extra time. "The trick is good," said Krul, who plays for Newcastle. "A lot of preparation went into it." The Dutch team will next face Argentina in the semifinals on Wednesday in Sao Paulo. Krul looked super confident during the shootout at the Arena Fonte Nova, saving the second and fifth penalties by diving to his left and sticking out his hand. When Krul stopped Ruizs penalty, Cillessen, watching from the sideline, punched the air in celebration. When he saved the second to win the match, Cillessen out-sprinted the rest of the bench to get to Krul, who was already being mobbed by jubilant teammates who had watched from the halfway line. Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas had kept his team in the match with a string of great saves in the first half and again in extra time. When Wesley Sneijder twice beat him late in regulation and again in the second half of extra time, the woodwork made the stop. Sneijder hit the post with a free kick in the 80th minute and sent a curling shot over Navas and off the crossbar before the penalty shootout. At the end, however, Navas could not stop any of the four Dutch penalties as veterans Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Sneijder and Dirk Kuyt all scored. The Krul substitution will only boost Van Gaals reputation as a coach who leaves nothing to chance and who has a golden touch with replacements. And it kept his tenure with the Netherlands alive for two more matches before he becomes the manager at Manchester United next season.Kurt Warner Cardinals Jersey . Dan Uggla hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the ninth inning, Monday night that lifted Atlanta to a wild 9-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Evan Gattis also homered twice and Uggla drove in five runs as the Braves won their fourth straight. The teams combined for five homers and 12 runs in the final two innings. Gattis, Uggla and Andrelton Simmons hit consecutive homers in the eighth that put Atlanta ahead 5-1. "We have a lot of guys who can change the game with one swing," Uggla said. "Tonight we were able to put some at-bats together. Didnt have much going early on but we were able to get to them." Domonic Browns three-run homer capped a five-run bottom of the eighth that gave the Phillies a 6-5 lead. But the Braves rallied against Jake Diekman (1-1). B.J. Upton walked, Freddie Freeman reached on a grounder when second baseman Chase Utley made a questionable decision to try for a forceout and Justin Upton walked to load the bases with no outs. After Gattis struck out swinging at a 98 mph fastball, Uggla drove an 0-1 slider from Diekman deep into the seats in left. "(Diekman) has electric stuff," Uggla said. "Its not a comfortable at-bat at all. He throws really hard and has great stuff. Well take it." Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez was impressed with his teams comeback, but not surprised by it -- especially at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park. "Its a resilient squad and in this ballpark weve seen it enough," Gonzalez said. "If you make a mistake, its in the seats." Neither teams closer was available. Philadelphias Jonathan Papelbon wasnt used because he had pitched three straight days, and Atlantas Craig Kimbrel has a sore shoulder. "For all those people who say anybody can close in the ninth, its a little different, a different animal," Gonzalez said. Gonzalez said Kimbrel, who experienced discomfort after recording his fifth save of the season on Saturday, is day to day. "Ive been so impressed with him," Gonzalez said. "Hes got command, hes got some life, he knows how to pitch." Gattis put Atlanta in front 2-1 with a two-run homer in the sixth off Roberto Hernandez. After the Braves hit three more homers in the eighth, the Phillies loaded the bases with no outs against Avilan. Howard struck out looking, but Byrd hit a two-run single that made it 5-3. Brown gave Philadelphia the lead with his first homer since last Aug. 14. The Upton brothers didnt get any hits, but they almost hit each other. Justin sent a liner that nearly took out B.J. as he led off third base. B.J. had to dive out of the way, got up slowly and stared at Justin in the batters box in mock disgust. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Top-seeded Tommy Haas retired with a shoulder injury while losing 6-3, 3-2 to Paolo Lorenzi of Italy in the Brazil Open semifinals on Saturday. Adidas Powerphase Uk . Haas said he "felt a lot of pain" in his right shoulder when he slammed his racket to the ground in frustration after losing his serve at 3-3 in the first set. He kept playing despite needing medical treatment several times, and finally gave up after going down another break in the second set. The 12th-ranked German said the pain was "getting worse during the match" and it didnt allow him to "compete the way" he wanted. "After I threw my racket when I got broken at three-all I felt a lot of pain in my shoulder and it never really got away," the 35-year-old Haas said. "The pain was getting worse. And the smart players decision has to be not to continue, unfortunately." Haas said he has been frustrated with shoulder problems and admitted it could play a factor on when to stop playing. "Ive had three shoulder injuries and one elbow injury, so my shoulder is not the youngest, not the way it needs to be," Haas said. "Im very happy that I can still play at a high level, but sometimes the shoulder is very, very tired, very, very stiff, and it tells me not to continue. But Ill try to play as long as I can, hopefully for the rest of the season, then we will see." The 32-year-old Lorenzi, ranked 114th, will play in his first ATP final against 61st-ranked Federico Delbonis of Argentina, who got past home-crowd favourite Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in 2 hours, 9 minutes. Lorenzi had previously never advanced past the quarterfinals. "When I started this tournament I never thought that I would be playing in the final," Lorenzi said. "Now tomorrow lets see what happens. Numbers Game breaks down the signings of Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik. The Capitals Get: D Matt Niskanen and D Brooks Orpik. Niskanen, 27, picked a terrific time to have the best year of his career, scoring a career-best 10 goals and 46 points while playing a career-high 21:18 per game. He was also a career-best plus-33, which is all well and good, but he was one of six regular defencemen (minimum 62 games played) to have a combined on-ice save percentage and on-ice shooting percentage (PDO) at 5-on-5 of 103.0 or better. An on-ice shooting percentage over 10.0% is difficult for any defenceman to sustain, but Niskanens 10.32% was the third-best of his career; basically, its the kind of good fortune that shouldnt be expected, but its not out of the realm of possibility from season to season for Niskanen. Where the puck luck really stuck with Niskanen last year, was that he also had a .928 on-ice save percentage during 5-on-5 play, so getting favourable percentages at both ends of the ice during the same year contributed to that strong plus-minus. That shouldnt diminish the evaluation of Niskanen entirely, though, because he has consistently been on the right side of the puck possession ledger, and that makes him an asset to any team that acquires him. While Niskanen hasnt typically played hard minutes, and in some years has been excessively sheltered, hes likely to face more difficult matchups now that hes the highest-priced defenceman on the Capitals roster. Signed for seven years and $40.25-million, Niskanen landed the biggest free agent contract of the year. There was probably an element of paying for the good fortune that Niskanen experienced last year, and it is a gamble that Niskanen is going to be able to live up to the money involved in that contract, but if a team is going to swing for the fences on a free agent defenceman, doing so on a guy with consistently strong possession numbers is at least a reasonable foundation on which to make that investment. Which brings us to Brooks Orpik, a 33-year-old who has made his bones as a physical, hard-hitting defenceman, registering more than 200 hits in five of the past seven seasons. The unfortunate part, however, is that Orpik in position to hit so much -- particularly in recent years -- because his team doesnt have the puck as often when hes on the ice and the problem with a defensive defenceman who is already on the wrong end of the possession game is that hes certainly not likely to get better as he gets older. For example, in the 2013-2014 season, there were seven defencemen that were over 35 and scored fewer than 20 points (as Orpik has in everyy season of his career, except one). Nmd r2 Primeknit Collegiate Navy. Its an okay list, some useful players, but six of the seven were 35 or 36. Orpik is signed through his age 38 season and the only -- the only -- NHL defenceman that played more than 60 games without scoring more than 20 points last season was Tampa Bays Sami Salo, who has never played the kind of physical, banging style that characterizes Orpiks game, in part because Salo was always hurt anyway. This doesnt offer much encouragement that the Capitals wont have massive regrets about the Orpik signing; the only question is how soon will those regrets occur? Can he give the Capitals a couple of solid years, maybe facing lower-calibre of competition than he did in Pittsburgh? Thats probably the best hope, but its a longshot that the last two, maybe even three years, wont have the Capitals paying big money for a spare part on their blueline. Orpik is signed for five years, at a cap hit of $5.5-million per season. Big money, long term. Pittsburgh anticipated that they would lose both Niskanen and Orpik and, in addition to having an opening or two for some prospects, they also signed Christian Ehrhoff to add stability to their defence.  Its entirely understandable for the Capitals to make a move to upgrade their defence. They allowed 33.5 shots per game, ranking 27th in the league, last season, so the defence needed to get better. Ultimately, the Capitals are better today after adding Niskanen and Orpik, but that should never be up for debate when committing close to $11-million annually to two players. What has to matter is how much better they are, whether the money spent is worth it and what the fall-out will be. The Capitals dont have to make any moves --- they are under the $69-million salary cap -- but they have $28,762,500 committed to their defence, according to Cap Geek. The only teams spending in that neighbourhood for their defence are Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, who have Chris Pronger and Mattias Ohlund, respectively, on long-term injured reserve. St. Louis and Chicago are spending in the $24-million-to-$25-million on their respective bluelines right now, so its hard to imagine that the Capitals maintain the status quo, leaving a hole at second line centre while sticking with the most expensive defence corps in the league. We will see what other moves the Capitals have in mind this summer but, right now, it appears that they spent a lot of money to get better in the short-term; signing deals that appear to have more downside risk because of the long terms involved. Tobias Enstrom picked up two assists but Ondrej Pavelec surrendered all four goals on just 18 shots through two periods in defeat. Michael Hutchinson stopped all nine shots he faced in relief. Its just back-breaking some of those moments in the game, we just cant escape from it seems like, and we just give up too good of a look, and its in our net, and thats on us, Wheeler said. We need to do a better job of trying to keep them on the outside, and when they do get opportunities, bear down in front of our net and let our goalie see the puck. Winnipeg cant afford to give up too many goals as it has not netted more than three itself in a game since a 6-2 win over Arizona on Oct. 9 to begin the season. Iginla scored his first two goals with the Avalanche since joining the club as a free agent while adding an assist in Fridays 7-3 victory over Vancouver. Matt Duchene added a goal and two assists, while defenseman Tyson Barrie had three helpers. Erik Johnson finished with a goal and an assist from the blue line, while Jamie McGinn, Daniel Briere and Gabriel Landeskog had goals to help snap Colorados four-game slide (0-2-2). It was a welcomed output as Colorado netted more than three goals in a game for the first time this season. Weve had some adversity this year and thought we were well-equipped to handle it, said Duchene. While this has been going on, our habits have been good. We knew the goals would start coming and now we hope the floodgates will stay open. CHICAGO -- This time, the Chicago Cubs were shut down by Mat Latos. Cheap Liverpool Shirts 18/19 . Starlin Castro had an RBI single for Chicagos only run in a 4-1 loss to Latos and the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. The Cubs began the day with a .232 team batting average, which was next to last in the National League. They managed just six hits in the series finale against Cincinnati. "The story for us has been that were not scoring enough runs for the starting pitchers and for this bullpen," catcher John Baker said. "Its frustrating for us position players." Its also frustrating for first-year manager Rick Renteria. "Theyre all chipping away at their approaches, but were facing some pretty good chuckers too," he said. "We just obviously werent able to generate a whole lot of runs." Edwin Jackson (5-8) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings for Chicago, which has dropped four of five. Starlin Castro had two hits and drove in a run. "Its a tough lineup. Theyre going to make you work," Jackson said. "I thought for the most part I was able to contain them until the sixth inning. They kind of busted it open a little bit." With the wind blowing in on a cold summer night, Devin Mesoracos five-game homer streak came to an end. The Reds catcher was tied with Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr., Johnny Bench, George Crowe and Ted Kluszewski for the franchise record. Latos (1-0) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in his third start after beginning the season on the disabled list. It was his first win since Sept. 2 against St. Louis. Latos was coming off a frustrating no-decision against Toronto, when he was staked to an 8-0 lead and was unable to hold on. He gave up five runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings as the Blue Jays rallied for a 14-9 victory Friday night. The Cubs fell to 12-31 against Cincinnati over the last three seasons. Pinch-hitter Justin Ruggiano doubled off the front of the basket in right field with two outs in the ninth. The call was upheld after Renteria called for a review, and Chapman struck out pinch-hitter Mike Olt to end the game. Cincinnati went ahead to stay with three runs in the sixth. Bruce put the Reds in front with a two-out double down the right-field line in the first, scoring Frazier from second. Votto tried to hustle home from first but was cut down at the plate on Darwin Barneys relay throw. The Cubs tied it in the fourth. Thats what they tell us. Play on until they score. Argentina and Netherlands may still be playing until Sundays final if that were the case. It was a drab affair, arguably the worst game of the World Cup. With so much on the line, no team came close to proving why they deserved to win it. Fittingly, the record books will show it as a draw: A stalemate in every sense of the word. It was a chess match where both players didnt make moves for long stretches. Just when it looked like either of them could capture their queen, along came two of the best pawns on the board. It was Javier Mascherano vs. Ron Vlaar. Both players were magnificent for their team but their standout performances said a lot about the oppositions weaknesses. Argentina have been waiting for a player to step up to a level that Lionel Messi has been at during this World Cup, but on a night when their current captain didnt get close to that level, their former skipper stepped up with an absolutely immense performance. Mascherano sat deep, allowed the defenders to play deep as well and flat out refused the Dutch any space in front of them. It forced their opponents to play long balls to try and get Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie into the match. In possession, Mascherano was also excellent with distribution helping his side attack down the right and target Bruno Martins Indi. Louis van Gaal reacted quickly at half-time by removing the Feyenoord man. That Argentina forced them into a move so quickly played a big part in how the game was played. When Nigel De Jong, back after a thigh injury, had to come off in the second half, suddenly van Gaal only had one move left. A move he decided to use by removing the ineffective van Persie in extra time. No one could argue that the Dutch team needed Klaas Jan Huntelaar but for a game that looked so destined for penalties, the removal of the Manchester United striker could be questioned. What definitely needs to be questioned is the order of the penalty takers for the Dutch. It was clear that van Gaal wanted to keep as many of his players in the same spot as they were used in the shootout victory over Costa Rica. That day the Dutch went four-for-four in order: van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, Kuyt. Huntelaar was the fifth taker but wasnt used. Against Argentina, van Gaal looked at his team and knew the only one he had to replace was van Persie at number one. Every credit to Ron Vlaar, the Aston Villa player, to step up and replace van Persie in the shootout but making him the first shooter was the wrong decision. In 24 previous World Cups the team that missed first lost 20 times. You cannot ask a player to take tthe first penalty in a key shootout when he wasnt even in your choice to be in the top five in the last shootout. Roberto Firmino Youth Jersey. . Vlaar had had a wonderful match. Argentina tried to force things wide but ultimately they were drawn back centrally and Vlaar, in the middle of the back three, won every tackle and aerial duel he went for. After 120 minutes, though, his job was not done. Showing nerves, he stepped up quickly, from the prompt of the whistle, and it wasnt a good penalty. The moment Vlaars effort was saved by Sergio Romero the momentum changed. Lionel Messi was the right choice for Argentina to take the first penalty and, to no ones surprise, he scored. Messi had struggled throughout the game, which was the first World Cup game he has played when he didnt get a touch in the opponents penalty area. It was clear the Dutch had done their homework and their mandate was to shut down Messi. He will receive his fair share of criticism based on this performance but, once again, this match was another shining example of how much he needs his teammates to take him to glory. The Barcelona man has carried Argentina to this stage, it is only fitting that some - in this case Romero, Mascherano and the rest of the shooters - helped carry him to the final. They are, however, a team that arrives in the final with flaws. This is nothing new. Many teams have reached the World Cup Final when not playing very well but few have won it. Argentina showed a lot of grit and fight in this semifinal, just like they did in the 120 minutes against Switzerland and the narrow 1-0 defeat over Belgium. However, despite their fight they do look very ordinary. They arrive in the final after scoring just two goals in three knockout matches. The only team in World Cup history to do that was Argentina in 1990 and that was a terribly average side who frustrated Germany for over 80 minutes in arguably one of the worst games in football history. No one will be hoping for a repeat on Sunday but I am sure it will cross Argentinas mind that they will be naive to think they can play an open, expansive game against Germany. The Dutch end their quest to be world champions with their heads held high. They went further than most imagined and many of their young players, players produced by their own clubs in their own league, will grow and get better for this experience. Many will also find new clubs, too. However, they will also reflect on just how close they were – once again – to getting over a significant hurdle on penalties. Van Gaal departs for Manchester United after a very good World Cup but ultimately his decision on the order of the takers had a massive impact on this result. ' ' '
