LAS VEGAS, Nev. Omar Vizquel Jersey . - Ed Davis is on his way to the Los Angeles Lakers, giving the changing Lakers frontcourt another athletic big man and Davis another chance to show what he can do. Davis agreed to a two-year, $2 million deal with the Lakers on Wednesday night, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because an official announcement has not been made. The deal includes a player option for the second season, giving him the chance to get back on the market quickly if things go well. Toronto made Davis the 13th overall pick in 2010, hoping the forward would add a dynamic element to its frontcourt. He showed real flashes early on in his career, averaging 7.7 points and 7.1 rebounds in under 25 minutes per game during his rookie season. Two years later, Davis was shipped to Memphis as part of the trade that sent Rudy Gay to the Raptors, and he struggled to find consistent playing time on a Grizzlies team loaded with talent and experience in the frontcourt. When the Grizzlies re-signed Zach Randolph this summer, it made Davis expendable. The opportunity is there for him in Los Angeles. The Lakers are going through a period of transition, with longtime power forward Pau Gasol headed to Chicago and veteran centre Chris Kaman gone to Portland. The Lakers brought back veteran Jordan Hill and drafted Kentuckys Julius Randle with the seventh overall pick in June. But thats about the extent of their depth in the frontcourt, so the opportunity is there for Davis to come in and make an impact. After bringing back Hill and guard Nick Young and acquiring point guard Jeremy Lin in a trade with Houston, the Lakers used up nearly all of their cap room. So squeezing in Davis for $2 million — a deal that was first reported by Yahoo! Sports — could be one of the bargains of the summer. Bob Feller Jersey .com) - Ben Lovejoy tallied a goal and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks cruised into the All-Star break with a 6-3 victory against the Calgary Flames. Tyler Naquin Jersey . "Rob brings a wealth of coaching experience, having worked both in Canada and overseas in player development," Canada Soccer technical director Tony Fonseca said in a release.First things first, congratulations to the Canadian athletes who did our country proud at the Olympics in Sochi. It wasnt just the medal count that was impressive, but the manner in which our Canadian men and women carried themselves on the World stage. Canadians proved once again that when they have the support they need, they can compete with any country in the world. And a very special thanks to our mens and womens hockey teams. They are the two teams that every four years seem to have more pressure on them to perform than any team in the history of sport. One observation before we get to football. Im not a hockey analyst, but Im a hockey fan, and fan of watching excellence, and it is very impressive to watch head coach Mike Babcock in action. Two things stood out while watching Babcock bring a group of superstars together. First, at about the midway point of the tourney, Babcock was asked why Sidney Crosby wasnt scoring. His reply: "everyone evaluates Sid on scoring, and I evaluate Sid on winning." He went on to suggest that Canadas lack of scoring shouldnt be judged as a poor offensive effort. "Dont get confused, we outchanced these teams big-time; we didnt score. We were a great offensive team. Thats how we coached." Babcock had asked this group of talented players to check their egos at the door and play a well rounded team game, and they complied. Proof of that was after the Gold Medal game, when Jonathan Toews was asked about the teams low offensive output in the tourney, and Toews answer suggested that at any time anyone on the Team Canada roster could have become more creative offensively and tried to put up big points, but that wasnt the plan and this team was going to stick to the plan. Yes, there were some close games including the 1-0 win against the Americans, but in the end Babcocks plan was bang on, and clearly not one player on Canadas roster was confused. Great stuff! Now to football, where one story has been in the shadows while we watched the Olympics. It involves the leagues newest team, the Ottawa Redblacks, and their quarterback situation. Lets hit the refresh button on the computer for a second. Just prior to the start of the Olympics, the Redblacks signed Henry Burris, and named him the starter at the press conference. This occurred not long after the expansion draft where Ottawa GM Marcel Desjardins chose Kevin Glenn from the Calgary Stampeders. In a conference call after the draft Glenn talked about how excited he was to have his own team to lead in the 2014 season. Then after the Burris announcement, Glenn had a bit of a Twitter issue where it looked like he was trying to direct message a couple of other players and accidentally sent a comment to the masses that wasnt exactly a ringing endorsement for the organization. Now Glenn claimed he was hacked, and maybe he was, but it doesnt change the fact that there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in the Nations Capital before they even take their first offensive snap. In a brief chat with Desjardins at the CFL Congress, the Ottawa GM indicated that he would listen to all trade offers of course, but would like to go to camp with all the QBs he currently has on his roster. However, will that be easier said than done? Glenn turned down my request to an interview for this story, as I tried to gauge where he is at mentally with regards to all that has developed in Ottawa. Now I respect Glenns choice to avoid hhaving to comment on the situation, but it does force us to speculate. Josh Tomlin Jersey. Does Glenn not want to talk publicly right now because he has nothing positive or constructive to say about the situation? Or is he declining interviews because he doesnt think there is anything to this story and that he is perfectly comfortable going to camp as the back-up to Burris? I know where my vote would go, but again it is only speculation. There are a few teams that could benefit from the addition of Kevin Glenn, and at the top of that list is the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Bombers have been searching for stability at QB for years now, and if they could somehow swing a trade with Ottawa, they would finally have it. In fact with Drew Willy getting his shot for the Bombers this year, acquiring Glenn would create a situation similar to what we have watched in Calgary the last couple of years. The Stamps have felt the future is Drew Tate (and now possibly Bo Levi Mitchell) and over the last two years had Glenn as the best insurance policy in the game. Willy with the veteran Glenn behind him is the same scenario and all of a sudden would give the Bombers a real chance to turn things around. Then again, how will Glenn feel about backing up Willy? Glenns situation is another example of the cliché that you hear from general managers all the time. "It is a great game but a terrible business." You cant fault Desjardins and head coach Rick Campbell for trying to acquire the best talent possible and create competition in camp. On the other hand, it is impossible to not feel for Kevin Glenn who just doesnt ever seem to be able to shake that back-up label, despite leading the Stamps to a West Final and a Grey Cup over the last two seasons. Also it is not that much of a stretch to suggest that the team that is able to acquire Glenn will become the best team in the league at the most important position on the field. Pick a team: BC, Travis Lulay and Kevin Glenn, not bad especially since Lulay is coming off another shoulder injury. Edmonton, Mike Rielly, Glenn and Matt Nichols. Reilly was very good last year and will be better, Nichols is working his way back from injury, Glenn gives them stability. Saskatchewan, Darian Durant and Glenn, tough to beat that experience. Toronto, Ricky Ray and Glenn, working in Scott Milanovichs offensive system, yikes! Montreal, the young Troy Smith learning from the veteran Glenn in meetings and on the practice field. I have left out Calgary and Hamilton because Glenn returning to either of those teams seems like a longer shot, however its not out of the realm of possibility, and both those teams would improve their chances of winning by adding Glenn. Which camp Kevin Glenn attends is a question that may not be answered for a while as teams sort through their rosters. However, it is a story I wanted to wedge in between the Olympics and the NHL trade deadline and one to watch as the off-season continues. In the meantime we can continue to speculate as to whether or not Glenn is angry with Ottawa and wants out, or is content to be the back-up to Burris and just doesnt want to talk about it. If the situation becomes confusing for Glenn or the brass in Ottawa they can refer back to Team Canadas Babcock and what he was able to do with that group of superstar hockey players. "Everyone evaluates Sid on scoring, and I evaluate Sid on winning." Dont get confused. Cheap Hockey Capitals Jerseys Cheap Hockey Penguins Jerseys Cheap Hockey Flyers Jerseys Cheap Hockey Rangers Jerseys Cheap Hockey Islanders Jerseys Cheap Hockey Devils Jerseys Cheap Hockey Blue Jackets Jerseys Cheap Hockey Hurricanes Jerseys Cheap Hockey Maple Leafs Jerseys Cheap Hockey Lightning Jerseys Cheap Hockey Senators Jerseys Cheap Hockey Canadiens Jerseys Cheap Hockey Panthers Jerseys Cheap Hockey Red Wings Jerseys Cheap Hockey Sabres Jerseys Cheap Hockey Bruins Jerseys ' ' '

The Lightning had lost two straight before beginning the current residency with wins over Minnesota and the New York Rangers. Both games were decided by one goal and ended in regulation. After edging the Wild 2-1 last Saturday, the Bolts had three days off before hosting Martin St. Louis and the Rangers on Wednesday. St. Louis, Tampas all- time leading point producer, returned to his old stomping grounds, but it was an ex-Ranger who would lead the Lightning to a 4-3 victory. Ryan Callahan, who came to Tampa in last seasons trade that shipped St. Louis to New York, had two goals and an assist to lead the Lightning to the triumph. It was the second standout performance for Callahan in as many games against his former club. He also had two goals in his return to Madison Square Garden on Nov. 17, sparking a 5-1 rout of the Rangers. Steven Stamkos made quite an impact on Wednesday as well, notching a goal and two assists in the Lightnings fourth win in their last six outings. Ben Bishop needed to make only 16 saves for the win. Another one-goal game, said Stamkos. We hold on and find a way to win these games and thats a good trait to have. The Bolts picked up their third straight win on home ice and own a stellar 9-2-1 record this season in Central Florida. Tampa could get a boost tonight with the potential return of top defenseman Victor Hedman. The big Swedish blueliner has been sidelined since Oct. 18 when he broke a finger on his right hand in a game against Vancouver, but he was cleared for contact earlier this week and is questionable for tonight. The 23-year-old Hedman was off to an excellent start to the season before the injury, posting three goals and four assists in five games. Bill Mazeroski Jersey. Bishop is expected to start tonight. He played spent parts of two seasons with Ottawa before being dealt to Tampa during the 2012-13 campaign and is 4-0-2 with a 2.55 goals against average against his old team. In other news for the Lightning, the club traded defenseman Eric Brewer to Anaheim on Saturday for a third-round pick in the 2015 draft. Brewer has four assists in 17 games for Tampa this season. Ottawa is hoping to get back on the right track tonight after losing for the third time in four games Friday evening at Florida. The Senators carried a 2-1 lead into the third period against the Panthers, but the home team skated away with the 3-2 victory. Sean Bergenheim tied the score at 2-2 just 34 seconds into the final stanza and less than seven minutes later Jimmy Hayes provided the game-winner for the Panthers. Craig Anderson played well in defeat, allowing three goals on 46 shots. Ottawa failed to win the shot advantage in any of the three periods and the Panthers outshot the Sens by a 34-13 margin over the final 40 minutes of play. We have a very good goalie, said Sens coach Paul MacLean. The rest of the group [was] not even close to being acceptable. Chris Neil had a goal and an assist for Ottawa, while Cody Ceci provided the other goal. The Sens have lost two of three (1-2-0) to begin a five-game road trip and are 5-6-1 as the visiting team this season. Ottawa will complete its swing Tuesday against the New York Islanders in the opener of a home-and-home set. Ottawa has won two straight and three of the last four meetings in this series and posted a 3-2 shootout win in Tampa on Oct. 11. Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro is delighted to see his old side doing so well, but is hoping to derail their Premier League title challenge when West Brom visit White Hart Lane on Monday Night Football. Chandler Shepherd Jersey . Sandro left Spurs in 2014 after four years at the club, and heads back to White Hart Lane for the first time as they continue their pursuit of Leicester. Im really excited. Its the first time Ill have been there since I left, Sandro told Sky Sports News HQ ahead of Monday Night Football. I had a good four years there. Now they can win the league so its been a massive change! Am I surprised by how well theyve done this season? Yes, a little bit. Its not just the attackers who are doing well, its the midfielders, the defenders, the manager.  Sandro in action for West Brom Theyve improved, you can see theyre enjoying their football. Im happy for them but now I have to try and stop them! For sure [I want them to win the league]. But we have to go there and try to stop them and try to win points. DETROIT -- A picture of Jim Leylands face stared out from the video board at an empty Comerica Park, next to that familiar Olde English "D" and a message that said simply: "Thank You Jim." After eight seasons managing the Tigers, including three division titles and two American League pennants, Leyland stepped down Monday. His voice cracking at times, his hands wiping away tears at others, he announced his departure two days after Detroit was eliminated by Boston in the AL championship series. "Its been a thrill," the 68-year-old Leyland said during a news conference at the ballpark. "I came here to change talent to team, and I think with the help of this entire organization, I think weve done that. Weve won quite a bit. Im very grateful to have been a small part of that." Leyland made his managerial debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986, and from Barry Bonds to Miguel Cabrera, hes managed some of the sports biggest stars and been involved in some of baseballs most memorable games over the past quarter-century. In 1992, his Pirates lost Game 7 of the NLCS when Atlanta rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning. Five years later, Leyland won his only World Series title as manager when his Florida Marlins beat Cleveland in an 11-inning thriller in Game 7. Hes experienced some of the highest highs the game has to offer, but also endured difficult rebuilding periods in both Pittsburgh and Florida. After one season with the Colorado Rockies, Leyland didnt manage at all from 2000-05 before Detroit hired him. Leyland led the Tigers to the World Series immediately after taking over in 2006, losing to St. Louis in five games. The Tigers went to the World Series again in 2012 but were swept by San Francisco. Leyland worked under one-year contracts the last couple of years, saying he was content to wait until after the season to address his status. He was reflective late this season, mentioning to reporters that he had already managed the Tigers longer than he had expected they would keep him, but he also said in September that he still loved the atmosphere, the competition and his team. In fact, hed actually told general manager Dave Dombrowski in early September that he didnt want to return as manager. He expects to remain with the organization in some capacity after going 700-597 as Tigers manager. "Im not totally retiring today, Im just not going to be in the dugout anymore," Leyland said. "I hope and pray that you give the next manager the same respect and the same chance that you gave me." Leyland says his health is fine, but its time to stop managing. He said he started weighing his decision around June. "I started thinking this was getting a little rough. I thought that the fuel was getting a little low," Leyland said. "I knew that Id get through it because I knew wed be playing for something." The Tigers figure to contend again next year, which may lead Dombrowski to look for a proven commodity who can come in and manage. Kirk Gibson, who led Detroit to the 1984 World Series title as a player, is now managing in Arizona, but Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall tried to quash any speculation that Gibson would return to the Tigers. Pedro Martinez Jersey. . "We would not grant permission (to the Tigers to talk to Gibson) if asked because we want him here, and he told me this morning he has no interest in leaving," Hall said. Detroits players found out about Leylands departure after Saturday nights game in Boston, where the Red Sox won Game 6 to take the series. "Youve got your head down, you lost and the seasons over, and then Jim dropped that bomb on us," outfielder Torii Hunter said. "I just had a feeling that it could have been his last year. All year, he was kind of emotional, and I just felt it." Leyland said there was no announcement Saturday because he wanted the focus to be on the victorious Red Sox. However, he was honest about how much this defeat hurt. "With all due respect to the Boston Red Sox -- who earned it, they won it, they deserve to be where they are -- I truly believe the Detroit Tigers should be playing here tomorrow," Leyland said. "This is one thats going to stick with me, this is one that really hurts, because I really felt like we let it get away." When Leyland arrived at the Tigers spring training camp this year, it marked 50 seasons since he first showed up there as an 18-year-old prospect. His playing career never amounted to much, but his accomplishments as a manager over more than two decades have been impressive. He is 1,769-1,728 overall during stints with the Tigers, Pirates, Marlins and Rockies. "I had sent him a text yesterday morning, just to congratulate he and the organization," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Not only on a great team and a great year, and express the respect we have for him and certainly personally have for him throughout his career. To see the announcement today, and listen to him and know that early September this was clearly in his mind, that surprised me." When Leyland took over the Tigers, they had gone 12 years without a winning season. During his tenure, they finished under .500 only once. Detroit has become one of baseballs glamour teams of late, with stars like Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer helping the team win games and draw fans. Cabrera won the Triple Crown and MVP award last year. Verlander won the MVP and Cy Young Award the previous season. "Its been as much fun for me to manage Ramon Santiago as it has Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander," Leyland said. "Now in saying that, it was also an honour to manage the Triple Crown winner, an MVP, a Cy Young winner." The Tigers should be able to keep their core of players mostly together for next season, but now theyll need to find a new manager to replace Leyland, who always earned high marks for his ability to keep his veterans focused. "He really cares deeply about his players," utility man Don Kelly said. "When you go out there, the way he treats you, you want to run through a wall for him, go out there and get a win. Thats the way he treated me. He treated everybody like that." Cheap Hockey Capitals Jerseys Cheap Hockey Penguins Jerseys Cheap Hockey Flyers Jerseys Cheap Hockey Rangers Jerseys Cheap Hockey Islanders Jerseys Cheap Hockey Devils Jerseys Cheap Hockey Blue Jackets JerseysCheap Hockey Hurricanes Jerseys Cheap Hockey Maple Leafs Jerseys Cheap Hockey Lightning Jerseys Cheap Hockey Senators Jerseys Cheap Hockey Canadiens Jerseys Cheap Hockey Panthers Jerseys Cheap Hockey Red Wings Jerseys Cheap Hockey Sabres Jerseys Cheap Hockey Bruins Jerseys ' ' '

"Theyre looking into it and well probably hear pretty soon," Nelsen said Tuesday, referencing the MLS. "I would say, as a guess, he probably might get a suspension." Jackson was yellow-carded in the 50th minute for an apparent elbow as players jostled in the buildup to a free kick in Saturdays 1-0 win over D.C. United. Nelsen said D.C. United midfielder Davy Arnaud was goading Jackson. "He shouldnt have retaliated but I can understand it," he said of the Brazilian. But Nelsen says he isnt about to shackle Jackson. "He just wants to win, the guy. Thats all he wants to do is he wants to win. Hell learn through experience, maybe theres better ways to do it. "But Id rather have guys who are wanting to win than little sheep out there. I understand weve got to tell him theres certain rules and regulations weve got to adhere to. "But theres a fire in Jackson that I really like and appreciate and he brings a lot of energy to this club." Toronto travels to Utah this weekend to play Real Salt Lake. And Nelsen was quick to point to Real Salt Lake forwards Alvaro Saborios weekend foul on A.J. DeLaGarza of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Saborio got a yellow card for the late challenge, with Galaxy players suggesting it should have been red. With Real Salt Lake already suffering a glut of injuries at forward, Nelsen did some campaigning Tuesday to reduce the RSL strike force by one more. "That could have broken his leg," Nelsen said of the Saborio challenge. "So if Jackson gets suspended, then youd like to hope that a guy whos nearly broken a guys leg is probably going to get suspended as well. "But I dont know, you never know. I dont make those rules." Jackson himself said he did not think a suspension is warranted, calling the incident "something that happened in the moment." That came with 2:26 left in overtime. Cobb finished with 12 points and the Bearcats defeated No. 19 San Diego State 71-62 on Wednesday night. Cincinnati wound up having three players reach double digits. Troy Caupain posted 12 points, four assists and four rebounds, while Gary Clark added 10 points and five boards for the Bearcats (7-2), who were coming off a 56-55 double overtime loss at Nebraska on Saturday. Cobbs triple was part of a 12-0 run that put the game away. Trey Kell nailed a trey to put the Aztecs up 60-59 with 4:11 to go prior to the Bearcats game- clinching surge. Octavius Ellis knocked down a jumper before Cobb sent everyone into a frenzy with his long distance shot. Winston Shepard, who sent the game into an extra session with a pair of game- tying free throws with three seconds left in regulation, tallied 17 points and five assists for San Diego State (7-3), which has dropped three of its last five games. The Aztecs, who came in shooting 28 percent from beyond the arc -- 300th in the country -- began 2-of-17 from long distance, but hit their next three, including a pair to help them force the extra session. Dante Pettis Jersey. . Gary Clarks layup with 43 ticks remaining in regulation staked the Bearcats to a 54-49 margin, but Aqeel Quinn and Tre Kell sandwiched treys around two Kevin Johnson free throws to get SDSU within 56-55 with 15 seconds on the clock. Caupain split a pair of bonus shots at the other end and Shepard drew a foul following a left wing drive. The Aztecs raced out to a 13-6 lead, but Cincinnati clamped down defensively in the final six-plus minutes. SDSU didnt score on its final 14 possessions, going 0-for-6 from the field and turning the ball over seven times. The Bearcats took a 22-20 edge into the break. He threw his fastball where he wanted it to go. His breaking stuff had good late movement. The Cincinnati Reds finally had to put him on base to get him out of the game. Arrieta retired his first 18 batters and struck out nine in seven impressive innings, leading Chicago to a 7-3 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday night. "He was commanding his pitches," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "His pitches had life." Arrieta (4-1) struck out eight during his perfect start, including the side in the sixth. He had a leadoff walk in the bottom half and came around to score when Homer Bailey (7-4) hit Starlin Castro with the bases loaded. That little trip around the bases proved costly. Rookie Billy Hamilton started the seventh with a single up the middle for Cincinnatis first baserunner. "I was pretty gassed there, unfortunately," Arrieta said. "Pretty humid night. Long inning there in the sixth. Running the bases, which really isnt all that tough in itself, but you couple that with being on the mound and having that long layoff, it adds a little bit to it." Arrieta allowed two runs and three hits while improving to 3-0 with a 1.14 ERA in five June starts. It was his first win of the season at Wrigley Field, where he has yielded three runs in 23 innings over four starts. "Really its just kind of going through the process that I feel like gives me the best chance to have success," he said, "and going through it day by day and sticking with it." Anthony Rizzo belted a solo homer for the second straight night for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Welington Castillo drove in two runs, including a sacrifice fly in Chicagos three-run eighth. Devin Mesoraco homered for the fifth straight game for Cincinnati, matching a franchise record. Mesoracos 14th homer came with one out in the ninth against Neil Ramirez. "It was late in the game. All the other homers were to help the team wiin, and important, big homers," he said. Asdrubal Cabrera Jersey. "They actually meant a lot. That one didnt really help us come back, so it doesnt mean as much." Mesoraco also had an RBI single in the seventh and scored on Jay Bruces double before Arrieta struck out Ryan Ludwick to complete his masterful night against one of the majors hottest lineups. Cincinnati had won three straight and nine of 12, averaging 6.7 runs and 10.2 hits per game in that stretch. The Cubs used four relievers to get through the eighth, and Ramirez finished Chicagos 12th win in 42 games against Cincinnati over the last three seasons. The Reds had runners at first and second in the eighth when third baseman Mike Olt made a nice diving stop on Todd Fraziers grounder for the final out of the inning. The start of the game was delayed 53 minutes by rain, but the pitchers adjusted quite nicely to the late start. Bailey retired his first 11 batters, striking out five. But Rizzo drove the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning into the basket in right-centre for the first of his three hits and his 17th homer this season. Castillo added a run-scoring double in the fifth, and the Cubs chased Bailey while scoring two more in the sixth. Nate Schierholtz had a sacrifice fly for the first of his two RBIs. Bailey allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two in his first loss at Wrigley since he pitched 5 1-3 innings in his first career appearance at the cozy neighbourhood ballpark on Sept. 13, 2009. The right-hander began the day with a 5-1 record and a 2.56 ERA in seven road starts against the Cubs. "Just bad pitch execution in the last inning or two," Bailey said. "That was probably the only thing I saw." NOTES: Hamilton extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. ... Cubs OF Emilio Bonifacio (rib injury) is working out, but has yet to resume baseball activities. "Hes improving," Renteria said. ... CHARLOTTE, N. Boston Red Sox Jerseys .C. -- Drayton Florence could go from playing football with his son in the backyard to NFL starter this week. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Florence, who re-signed with Carolina on Thursday, could be pressed into a starting role this Sunday when the Panthers host Eli Manning and the New York Giants due to injuries at the cornerback position. Florence, a 10-year NFL veteran who has played in 143 career games and started 99, attended training camp with the Panthers and worked primarily with the starters during the preseason before being released in final roster cuts. Florence said he spent the past two weeks at his home in Jacksonville, Fla., playing football with kids, taking them to swim lessons and getting on his wifes nerves. "You have to be ready for everything," Florence said. "It was getting a little frustrating sitting on the couch, so Im glad they thought enough of me to bring me back." Rivera said injuries to cornerbacks Josh Thomas (concussion) and Josh Norman (thigh bruise) prompted the Panthers to re-sign Florence. Although both Thomas and Norman returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday, there is still plenty of concern over their status for Sunday. Two other Carolina cornerbacks -- DJ Moore (knee) and James Dockery (hand) -- did not practice Thursday. "The concern is not only if everyone is going to be cleared, but if theyre going to be 100 per cent," Rivera said. "As we look at it, a concussion is scary thing and a cornerback with a deep thigh bruise is a scary thing. We had to take a lot of things into account and we think (signing Florence) was a prudent move. ... We were down to two healthy cornerbacks." Rivera said he has plenty of confidence in Florence, saying he fit right in at practice Thursday. "It was like he never left," Rivera said. "He did a nice job understanding the concepts that were using for this game. Its interesting, but veteran guys like that do make the transition easily." Florence has played for San Diego, Jacksonville, Buffalo and Detroit and has 444 career tackles and 18 interceptions. Florence said hes happy to be back in Carolina, despite the way things abruptly and unexpectedly ended three weeks ago. He called it a humbling experience. "Anytime you get fired from your job its tough, but it would be a lot tougher to come back and be a disappointment," Florence said. Rivera also seems to have settled on a starting strong safety. He ruled out Quintin Mikell for the game Sunday and said he expects undrafted rookie Robert Lester from Alabama will get his first NFL start against Manning. Lester was promoted from the teams practice squad to the 53-man roster earlier this week. "We think Robert Lester is a young man thats got an opportunity," Rivera said. "Hes the next best available for us." Mike Mitchell will start at free safety for Carolina and Captain Munnerlyn will be the other starting cornerback. NOTES: To make room on the roster for Florence, the Panthers waived backup centre Brian Folkerts. ... Rivera said it is likely rookie RB Kenjon Barner (foot) will be held out until after the bye week.Chris Sale Red Sox Jersey . The NFL Combine wrapped up this week and the impact on the mock drafts and predictions around the league is already being felt. Marcus Peters Jersey . While some players merely solidified their standing on big boards and mock drafts, several others saw their Combine results either boost or drop their placing in the mind of scouts and general managers across the league. Some notes from the NFL Combine Two-Horse Race A look at the most recent batch of mock drafts has two players showing up more often than any others at the top spot. One wont surprise you – South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney – but one certainly could – UCF quarterback Blake Bortles. While questions about his work ethic may knock Clowney out of the top spot, his blistering 40-yard dash time (4.53) ensures that if he does fall, it wont be very far. Bortles meanwhile impressed both on the field and off. Almost all draftniks and experts consider the once unknown QB to be a legit top end prospect. Of the 15 expert mock drafts gathered for TSN.cas database, Bortles had the most first overall picks of any player. Quarterback Battle While mock drafters are slotting Bortles into the first pick (owned by the Houston Texans) more than any other quarterback, that doesnt necessarily mean hes viewed as the top quarterback. Of the 15 expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, Bortles had just the third highest average draft position. First was Texas A&Ms Johnny Manziel with an ADP of 3.1 followed by Louisvilles Teddy Bridgewater (3.9) and then Bortles at 4.7. Dont Forget Me While hes not in the same boat as Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortles, Fresno States Derek Carr reportedly had a very strong NFL Combine showing, particularly while interviewing with teams. At this point Carr appears to be a mid-first round pick at best but his showing has some quarterback-needy teams considering passing on one of the top three QBs early in the draft to fill other positions, while hoping to land Carr later on. There are reports the gap between the Big Three and Carr is not very wide. Moving Up The biggest benefactors of the NFL Combine, among the early picks at least, were Auburn OT Greg Robinson and Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. Robinsons athleticism seems to have solidified him as the top offensive tackle on the board and boosted his projected status from Top 10 pick to Top 5. Robinson could even hear his name as early as second overall to the St. Louis Rams. Mack is another former potential Top 10 pick that could easily find his way into the Top 5 come May. While his destination is hard to pinpoint at this point in the evaluation process, respected NFL Network draftnik Mike Mayock said he would consider Mack with the first overall pick. Thats high praise! Moving Down The rise of Robinson and Mack is having adverse effects on players of similar talent at the same position of the two in Jake Matthews and Anthony Barr. Once considered two of the top three players in the draft (alongside Clowney) by some, Matthews and Barr are no longer locks to be Top 5 picks and thats in large part due to Robinson proving hes the better offensive tackle, and Mack proving hes far closer to Clowney than originally thought. At this point it wouldnt be shocking to see Barr fall out of the Top 10 picks (ADP currently 8.9) while even Matthews could see himself suffer the same fate (ADP currently 5.9) the way things are playing out. To be fair, in Barrs case, Mack isnt the sole reason the UCLA pass rushers stock is falling; only 15 reps on the bench press could scare away a few teams. Lions targeting a CB The Detroit Lions need help at cornerback and most draftniks expect them to get it at the draft. Of the expert mock drafts culled by TSN.ca, 86% of them have the Lions taking a cornerback 10th overall. The only question in their minds is if it will be Oklahoma States Justin Gilbert, taken by the Lions in 53% of mock drafts, or Michigan States Darqueze Dennard, taken by Detroit in 33% of mock drafts. The current draft landscape lays out with a slight drop off after the top nine players. From there its still anyones guess as to who leads the second tier of players. Many mock drafters see the Lions filling a need and taking whichever cornerback they have ranked the highest. Wide Receiver Battle This position battle is unlike the quarterback battle as Clemson standout Sammy Watkins is the clear cut top pass catcher in this years draft. The battle is for the second best receiver with USCs Marqise Lee losing his spot to Texas A&Ms Mike Evans in 80% of mock drafts gathered. The receiver class is very deep this year with good pass catchers still likely to be available midway through the second round and if Lee finds himself engulfed in the second tier of receivers, hes no lock to hear his name on the first day of the NFL Draft. The true battle could be between Evans and North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. The difference between their ADP is currently only a couple of picks (Evans: 13.8 to Ebron:16.0). Los Angeles Rams Jerseys . -- Brendan Leipsic had two goals and an assist and Nicolas Petan extended his point streak to 11 games as the Portland Winterhawks slipped past the Red Deer Rebels 5-4 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action. Custom Los Angeles Rams Jerseys .J. LOS ANGELES -- Nino Niederreiter scored the tying goal early in the third period and netted the only goal in a four-round shootout to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. The Wild, playing their first game since leading scorer Mikko Koivu broke his ankle Saturday at Washington, have won three straight for the first time since Nov. 1-5. Coming off a 5-3 victory in which they were outshot 30-11 by the Capitals, the Wild were outshot 30-9 by Los Angeles through the first two periods of the scoreless game. Kuemper stopped seven shots during the Kings first power play, which came after Matt Cooke was sent off for slashing at 6:47 of the second. The 6-foot-5 goalie got a break midway through the period, when Dwight King hit the right post with a shot from the left point after a turnover by Minnesota defenceman Keith Ballard. Another Kings scoring chance came with about 5 minutes left in the first when Carter stickhandled around Ryan Suter in the left circle and found King cruising down the slot. Joseph Noteboom Jersey.
