Teemu Selanne will make a decision next week on whether or not hell return to the Anaheim Ducks for another season. Selanne, 43, has already met with Ducks general manager Bob Murray and both sides agreed to talk again soon. "By next week, I know what Im going to do," he told The Orange County Register on Monday. The veteran right winger added that if he were to return, he would want to do so as a top-six player. "My point is, if theyre better than I am, I am expecting and accepting a smaller role," he explained to The Register. "But if Im better, I need to play more. I need to play top minutes. Thats what Im looking for. "Thats fair for everybody. To be honest, Ive been playing a big role. I dont know if Im ready to play 10-12 minutes a game. And thats what I want to make sure. If I play well, I get what I deserve. Sometimes its not like that. So I want to make sure Im treated the way I deserve." Selanne had 12 goals and 24 points in 46 games for the Ducks last season. He also scored a goal and tallied three points in Anaheims first-round loss to Detroit in the playoffs. He has spent 14 seasons of his 20-year NHL career with the Ducks, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2007. A relieved Wade Graham is determined to make up for lost opportunities when he finally makes his State of Origin debut next week.Graham was rubbed out of the NSW side for game two due to suspension but was recalled to coach Laurie Daleys side on Monday for Origin III in place of Greg Bird.Daley had said upon Grahams one-match suspension for a high tackle on Johnathan Thurston that the Cronulla star might never play Origin.Graham hoped at the time, it wouldnt be the case.Im pretty excited, when I got the message last night it was a pretty special feeling, Graham said. You dont think anything will top the first time you get told, but it was definitely sweeter the second time. There is a lot of relief that I get the opportunity.Graham said he didnt dwell on missing out on game two.It was a tough time and it all felt like a blur, he said.Probably the hardest part was going to the game, watching the boys warm up, and knowing that I couldnt do it.However Graham returned to the NRL, didnt take Daleys comments to heart and held his form for a deserved call-up.I didnt think about it too much. I understood where Laurie was coming from, that it is hard to get an opportunity and that when you do get an opportunity you have to make the most of it, he said. For myself I was just taking from those comments as it was an opportunity lost.Graham will play his first game in good friend and Sharks teammate Paul Gallens final Origin game.He is someone who has had a massive influence on my career, Graham said.He is someone I have watched and admired for a long time and someone who has become a friend so to be able to share this stage with him will be pretty special.Gallen welcomed Grahams selection.I am so happy and proud of him I get emotional about it, Gallen said.I know he came to Cronulla after a phone call I made to him. After the whistle, Thornton skated the length of the ice, pulled Orpik to the ice from behind and punched him in the face several times. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Of all the things on Jacksonvilles lengthy to-improve list, starting faster is near the top of the list. The Jaguars were among the NFLs worst first-quarter teams in 2015. They scored just 35 points in the opening period, second worst in the league behind San Francisco. There were a number of persistent issues, including turnovers, sacks and penalties. Jacksonville also ranked 31st in three-and-outs, failing to move the chains on 38.3 percent of its drives. Throw in a mediocre running game, and the teams sluggish offense early in games was as big a problem as its porous defense.General manager Dave Caldwell did everything he could to fix the defense this offseason. He spent big in free agency and drafted several youngsters to fill holes on that side of the ball. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson and quarterback Blake Bortles, meanwhile, are still working to find a permanent fix to the slow starts. They will get their first chance to show progress Thursday night in the teams preseason opener at the New York Jets. You want to get in a groove and get moving, Bortles said Tuesday. It would be nice to not have to deal with a third down on the first drive. ... Its not a good feeling to go out there for the first possession and everybodys amped up and ready and you go three-and-out, and then you go and repeat and go three-and-out again.Thats what were trying to eliminate. How do we become consistent in moving the chains and being more efficient on third down and staying on the field?Olson talks about it daily and treats each of the 12 practice periods in training camp like the beginning of a new game. So the Jaguars are getting plenty of chances to work on faster starts, but the first real test comes against the Jets.We have to make the layupss, tight end Marcedes Lewis said.dddddddddddd Thats one of the things that were missing last year. We had way too many silly things put us in holes. And when were faced with adversity, weve got to be able to punch it in the mouth and keep going. That was our issue, too, last year. If something bad happened, the air was just out of the whole sideline and out of the ball. We cant be like that this year.It should help that the Jaguars have the majority of their offensive starters going into their second season in the same offense. There is no learning curve or transition period like during Olsons first season in Jacksonville.Bortles knows the plays as well as anyone. Tight end Julius Thomas is healthy after playing last season with a broken bone in the back of his right hand. The addition of Chris Ivory should bolster the running game. And with center Brandon Linder back from injury and Kelvin Beachum expected to step in at left tackle, the Jaguars should be better up front. All those factors could help the Jags get out of the gates quicker.Of course, then they will be concerned with sustaining it.Its not just about whether we start super-fast, Lewis said. We just need to play ball. In years past, if we didnt start fast, wed be behind and have no momentum and no idea how to get it back. Now, we have players. Lets just go out there and play ball and not worry about starting fast. If we do start fast, great, but you cant get too high or too low about it. Youve got to stay in that zone and be consistent, and I think well finally be able to do that.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Tyler Eifert lined up here, there and just about everywhere during his first practice with the Cincinnati Bengals. Felt like old times. The Bengals got started on their new tight end-heavy passing game Friday at the start of a weekend rookie minicamp. A lot of the focus was on Eifert, chosen in the first round to give quarterback Andy Dalton another target. Eifert lined up in a lot of different spots at Notre Dame. Judging by the first day of practice in Cincinnati, hes going to be doing the same thing in the NFL. "A lot of the things Im learning are a lot of the same plays we had in with two tight ends -- move me around in different positions," Eifert said. "Today I was out in the slot quite a bit. I think Im picking it up pretty fast." With Dalton watching from the sideline, Eifert made a nice one-hand catch during the morning workout, a preview of what he can bring to an offence thats been overly dependent upon receiver A.J. Green. The Bengals havent added another proven receiver in the off-season. Rather, they took Eifert with the 21st overall pick, figuring his ability to catch the ball in a crowd -- he set a Notre Dame recover for catches by a tight end -- will give them some versatility and force defences to worry about someone other than Green. Eifert lined up as a tight end on either side and also as a slot receiver during practice. The biggest challenge was learning the Bengals language for each play and the pass protections. "I think I picked it up better than I thought I would at first," Eifert said. "Its not a whole lot, but its definitely something new for me. Im catching on pretty quickly and moving around quite a bit." The Bengals would like to use him along with tight end Jermaine Gresham, their first overall pick in 2010. The New England Patriots have shown that a two-tight end approach can keep defences off balance, provided that both can catch the ball. New Englands Tom Brady set career highs in yards passing and touchdowns in 2011, using his tight ends generously. Defences had trouble handling both Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez in the two-tight end approach. Gronkowski had 90 catches for 1,327 yards that season. Hernandez had 79 for 910. "You look at that year, and a lot of people dont realize that Tom had his best statistical season ever in history," said running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who was with New England then. "We threw the ball numerous times. We ran the ball three to five times a game. "Of course, thats not what you want to do when youre a running back. But we were winning games. It was a shock to the league that year. It can actually be a great thing when you have two guys who can catch the ball. It takes a lot of pressure off what you can do because you had to prepare for all those guys." Dalton thinks that having two tight ends who can catch the ball will make defences vulnerable somewhere. Dalton wasnt allowed to work out with the rookies during minicamp. He left the field as the morning workout was wrapping up. "You get the matchup of the tight ends on the linebackers and safeties," Dalton said recently. "So I think hes going to be a great addition. Hes going to make Jermaine a better player. Im excited to get him in here and get working with him." ------ NOTES: The Bengals signed seventh-round picks OT Reid Fragel from Ohio State and centre T.J. Johnson from South Carolina, the first of their draft picks to agree to contracts. ... LB J.K. Schaffer, who was signed to the practice squad last season, participated in the workouts. "I was on the practice squad last year and I just never got that many quality reps with the actual calls and making adjustments," Schaffer said. "I think its a real good opportunity for me to get back myself rolling and get back into some football." ESPN NFL Insider Mike Sando spends each Sunday with ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden and the Monday Night Football crew. This week, theyre in Charlotte for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Carolina Panthers matchup (ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET). Here are some takeaways from Gruden on the Buccaneers.Jameis Winston is a great talent with all the tools to become the quarterback the Buccaneers sought with the first pick in the 2015 NFL draft. Winston is smart enough, tough enough and athletic enough to be a star in the NFL. Much of Winstons film is not just good, but borders on sensational. He is an exciting young player. There are still important hurdles for Winston to clear if he hopes to become as consistent as the Buccaneers need him to be. A deeper look at the good and the bad sets up Winstons Monday Night Football debut. The goodMental side of the game: Winston is a smart quarterback. He can recognize, communicate and execute. Last year, when he was a rookie, Winston saw New Orleans show a bison blitz with the strongside linebacker and strong safety overloading the left side of his offensive line, and he recognized the problem right away and audibled into a stretch running play that gashed the defense. Winstons ability to take over the game from a mental standpoint is excellent. New Formula One chairman Chase Carey says Liberty Media has the best interests of the sport in mind, and have not taken over to simply take the money.Earlier this month Liberty Media agreed to purchase a controlling stake in Formula One in a deal which will be completed next year. The American media company will become the majority stakeholder in place of private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, who purchased the controlling stake in 2006.In their time as majority shareholder CVC was criticised for the fact it seemed to take money from F1 without putting back in, something Carey, who has been installed chairman by Liberty, says the new owners will not do. The American has instead promised to take F1 to the next level.Of course, profits are important -- but realistically the primary goal of the business that I have been in has always been to build long-term value, Carey told the F1 website. So the goal is not what can be achieved in the next 12 months, but where you are going to be in three to five years.Liberty, to its credit, has a history as a long-term shareholder. They are supportive and they know their business, as they have been in the media and entertainment space. It sure is nnot take the money with a focus on how to get the profits up in the next 12 months -- its about how to build long-term value.ddddddddddddo the focus will be investing and building over time. That is the mindset that we bring and hopefully it will enable us to bring Formula One to the next level.Carey, who has also outlined a desire to take F1 to the worlds great cities, says his first few weeks and months of being chairman are about understanding the wider context of everything going on in the sport.Realistically what I am doing in the next few months is probably more listening to what people have to say, and adjusting that. Yes, it is a sport with a wide range of constituents, so it is important to understand what each of those constituents objectives are, what their issues are.You cannot make everybody happy all the time, but youve got to understand what everybody wants and then find a path. Sure, that is not a task for a committee, as committees tend to become bureaucratic. But there also cant be a dictatorship, even if probably here they are used to it. ' ' '
