TORONTO - Fourteen times Brett Lawrie has struck out to end an inning this season. Nike Air Max Osta . The routine after the third strike, be it called or a swing and miss, is familiar. Bat is dropped, helmet is removed and dropped to the ground and Lawrie takes a mission-oriented walk toward his third base position, removing his batting gloves as he goes. Thirteen times the routine didnt result in ejection. The fourteenth, at the end of the third inning of what would be a 10-6 Blue Jays loss to Baltimore, was different. "It was a called strike three; he threw down his helmet and his bat, and was given an equipment fine by the home plate umpire,” said crew chief Wally Bell, speaking on behalf of home plate umpire Dan Bellino. “As (Lawrie) walked away, in (Bellinos) opinion, he flipped the gloves back in a bad manner and that will get an ejection. Thats what it was. He threw them back toward Danny in a way that wasnt etiquette in baseball and he was ejected for it.” Needless to say, Lawrie had a different view of the how the incident unfolded. “From my standpoint, the at bat was over, flipped my bat down, flipped my helmet down, walked to my position,” said Lawrie. “Apparently you get in trouble for that.” After the ejection Lawrie watched the replay. His opinion didnt change. “I had no idea, he had no idea, he threw me out,” said Lawrie. “Apparently he warned me. He gave me a warning, once I watched it on the replay, when I flipped my bat down, I flipped my helmet down, right there and I didnt do anything. I mean, just the way you guys saw it is what happened. I mean, I didnt do anything. I didnt say one word to him, not one, didnt look at him one time and Im in trouble for that.” Lawrie was visibly miffed with Bellinos second strike call on the 1-1 pitch from Orioles starter Chris Tillman. It was a curveball which caught the plate but crossed at the top of the letters. Traditionally, thats a ball. He was rung up on the next pitch. Manager John Gibbons was tossed and while he wouldnt divulge the nature of his conversation with Bellino, Bell told a pool reporter it was inbounds for Gibbons to come out of the dugout to protect his player. The ejection occurred once the conversation turned to balls and strikes, a no-no in baseball. Lawries older sister, Danielle, 25, took to Twitter to denounce the state of Major League Baseballs umpiring.“The umps these days in @mlb can suck it,” she tweeted. “Some of the worst calls I have ever seen have been this 2013 season. #callthegamerightdouches” Danielle Lawrie is no stranger to the game. She played for Canadas womens softball team at the 2008 summer Olympics in Beijing and was a college standout at the University of Washington, helping the Huskies to the womens softball national title in 2009. Approximately an hour later, presumably after getting feedback from the Twitterverse, Danielle continued.“To everyone out there, Im not saying what my brother did was RIGHT at all, Im saying these umps are horrific and are not held accountable. “Players cant continue to sit baak (sic) and just get [expletive] on at bat after at bat….Id wanna show someone up thats terribe (sic.) #embarrassem” The events of Friday night are likely to rekindle the discussion on the Blue Jays sometimes tenuous relationship with umpires. Jose Bautista led off the inning in which Lawrie would later be ejected. He was called out on strikes and made his displeasure known. Lawrie, who was suspended for four games following the now infamous helmet-tossing incident of May 15, 2012, wasnt sure if his reputation was part of, or all of, the reason for Friday nights ejection. “I dont really think about that,” said Lawrie. “Todays a new day. I dont really worry about stuff thats happened in the past. I just take it for what it is and I guess thats just the way it is tonight.” Nike Air Max Kengät Ale . The Spaniard was appointed Newcastle boss on Friday after Steve McClaren was finally relieved of his duties and is tasked with steering the second-bottom Magpies to safety. It will be no easy initiation for Benitez, with league leaders Leicester up first in Monday Night Football, but Newcastle fans with one eye on Sundays Sky Live derby clash with bitter rivals Sunderland may take hope from their new managers previous against Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce. In what could be another shot in the arm for kabaddi in India, women players will, for the first time, take the court at the Pro Kabbadi League (PKL) on Tuesday evening. Cheap Vans Shoes For Sale . Though not officially part of the league, the womens fixtures, christened Womens Kabaddi Challenge will run concurrently with the PKL.Three womens teams - Fire Birds, Ice Divas and Storm Queens - will be in action with the opening match being played between the Fire Birds and Ice Divas in Mumbai on Tuesday. The final will be played in Hyderabad on July 31, along with the PKL final.Speaking to ESPN, PKL founder Charu Sharma says the plan to have womens competitions was on the anvil right from the inaugural PKL edition two years ago but fell through the cracks. We did not want to bite off more than we could chew in the first edition. Also, we wanted the growth to be more organic rather than jump into something which we were not sure of being able to handle. Though not officially part of PKL, we thought this would be the best way to showcase womens kabaddi. The players were picked following selection trials conducted under the aegis of the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India (AKFI) which was followed by a month-long camp to enhance their soft skills to handle televised matches better and also to train them in competing in a larger court.Usually, men compete in a larger court, measuring 13m in width and 10m long, as opposed to women. Court size in womens kabaddi is slightly smaller - 12m wide and 8m long.Since the womens matches will be played in the same venue and court immediately after the mens match there was little scope for altering court dimensions. We have chosen to slot the womens matches on the days theres one mens match, adds Charu, I never had the slightest doubt in my mind that womens kabaddi in India will be a success just the PKL.Arjuna awardees Tejaswi Bai (Storm Queens), Mamtha Poojari (Fire Birds) and Abhilasha Mhatre (Ice Divas) have been named captains. It will only get bigger and better from next season, promises Charu. We would want to turn it into an independent womens league in the forthcoming years, whether or not we will run it alongside the PKL is a call we have to take. The first match is slated to take place on Tuesday between Firebirds and Ice Divas at ?DOME@NSCI SVP Stadium in Mumbai at 9 pm IST. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos standout cornerback Chris Harris Jr. declared himself healthy Wednesday, four days after Titans wide receiver Harry Douglas took out his right knee on a low block that reverberated throughout the league .Harris said he hadnt heard of any fines over the incident and subsequent sideline scrum when teammate Aqib Talib tussled with the Tennessee receiver, whom Talib also vowed to beat up in the offseason.Harris reiterated his call for the NFL to fine Douglas and he said hell be disappointed if the league, which has made player safety a priority, doesnt reprimand the ninth-year receiver.Douglas wasnt flagged for the low block, which is technically legal but which the Broncos argued was unnecessary because the two were nowhere near the pile. The Broncos said the only purpose for the block was to injure Harris. There aint no point in cut-blocking a guy when the runs way over on the opposite side and I dont have no impact on the play, Harris said.He added that hes been cut all the time, but I havent been cut like that to where somebody just goes straight for my knees. If Ive been cut, theyve tried to him me in my ankles and its not too painful. But to go directly at my knee like that, I would expect them to really look at that and try to have some player safety for the defensive backs, especially when the plays not even going toward you.Harris stayed on the ground forr a couple of minutes after getting hurt late in the first half of Denvers 13-10 loss. It was just bruised. His helmet hit my knee so it cut it open. I was bleeding a lot. So, I once that healed up, Im pretty good now, Harris said.He added that several NFL players had reached out to him in support after seeing the play.Oh yeah, tons of players around the league did. A lot of defensive backs hit me up, Harris said. I just told them if you play those guys just be ready.Douglas defended his block on Harris and his reputation after the game, pointing out that the hit was allowable and insisting hes not a dirty player. So, when a reporter asked Harris on Wednesday if Douglas had reached out to him to apologize, Harris laughed. You all saw his interview. He says its a clean play. He felt like hes a clean guy, hes not a dirty guy. Thats how he feels, Harris said. But I mean, he cant run no routes on me. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Cheap Nike Air Max Shoes Wholesale . -- An unlikely kick a week ago doomed Florida State. An unlikely blocked kick now might have saved the Seminoles season.DeMarcus Walker pushed through the line and blocked Miami kicker Michael Badgleys point-after attempt with 1:38 remaining, and that was the difference as No. 23 Florida State escaped with a 20-19 victory over the 10th-ranked Hurricanes on Saturday night -- the Seminoles seventh straight win over their archrival.Thats a Florida State-Miami game, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said. Its great competition. Heck of a game.Heck of a finish, too.Walker is from Jacksonville, Florida -- which was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew, and that was on the Florida State stars mind as he lined up for that crucial point-after play.I was just so heartbroken with everything that happened, Walker said. I did it for them.Dalvin Cook and Kermit Whitfield had touchdown catches in the third quarter. Deondre Francois, who left in the first half after being shaken up, came back and ended up with 234 yards passing for Florida State (4-2, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). My team needed me, Francois said. The trainers got me right. The Hurricanes (4-1, 1-1) were in position to tie it after Brad Kaaya connected with Stacy Coley on an 11-yard touchdown pass. But the 6-foot-3 Walker pushed through some blockers and got his arm outstretched just enough to knock away what would have been the tying point from Badgley. So once again, in a series defined so many times by missed kicks by the Seminoles -- like Wide Right I in 1991 that wound up helping Miami win the national championship, an accomplishment the Hurricanes celebrated the 25th anniversary of Saturday -- theres now a new piece of lore. Not being able to protect well enough to kick an extra point is tough, Miami coach Mark Richt said. Tough for everybody. But, to their credit, somebody cared enough to blast through and get it. It was a great effort on their part.Florida State saw its 22-game home winning streak end last weekend when North Carolina connected on a 54-yard field goal as time expired. But the streak over Miami lives on.Cook finished with 150 yards rushing and had a 59-yard scoring catch to spark the Seminoles second-half surge, and Whitfields 20-yard catch on his 23rd birthday put Florida State ahead for good.Coley caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Kaaya to help Miami take an early 13-0 lead. But for the third straight year, the Hurricanes saw a second-half lead slip away. Braxton Berrios set up Coleys second TD catch with a punt return inside the Florida State 20, but it wasnt enough. Its a heartbreaker, Kaaya said.Kaaya lost a molar in the third quarter when he took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Florida States Matthew Thomas, who was ejected for targeting -- the second straight year a Seminoles player was tossed for targeting the Miami quarterback. And in the fourth quarter, Miamis Jamal Carter was thrown out for a targeting hit against Whitfield. Some Miami fans showered the field with debris at that point, and Richt wasnt happy either. But in the end, it was a kick that decided everything -- and the break went Florida States way. This just shows the character and fight these guys have, Cook said. Hats off to Miami. Great team. They battled.THE TAKEAWAYFlorida State: Cook has two career touchdown catches -- both against Miami. ... The Seminoles lost safety Nate Andrews in the first quarter, who was hurt on a play where he tackled Miamis David Njoku. ... Florida State now has a pair of seven-game winning streaks against Miami, this other coming between 1963 and 1972. ... The Seminoles are now 13-2 under Fisher when playing in NFL stadiums.Miami: The Hurricanes went 281 minutes, 28 seconds this season without trailing. They came into the night as one of only two FBS teams who hadnt faced a deficit this season, with Boise State now alone on that list. ... RT Sunny Odogwu got hurt in the fourth quarter, on a drive where the Hurricanes allowed back-to-back sacks of Kaaya at a critical time. Odogwu was taken off the field on a cart after time expired.POLL IMPLICATIONSThe second-longest active streak of AP Top 25 poll appearances will live on -- since Florida State surely will hold a spot for the 76th straight week after this comeback win. Miami likely would have climbed a spot or two with a victory, though now the Hurricanes will drop several spots when the next installment of the poll comes out Monday.UP NEXTFlorida State: The Seminoles host Wake Forest on Oct. 15, looking for their fifth straight win in that series. Score of the last four matchups: 178-22, though last year was 24-16.Miami: The next two games will likely decide Miamis fate in the ACC Coastal race. North Carolina visits the Hurricanes on Oct. 15, five days before Miami goes to Virginia Tech. Cheap Nike Air Max Shoes For Sale . GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There are plenty of concerns surrounding the Green Bay Packers offense headed into Sundays NFC matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The Packers rushing attack has been productive, but their backfield has some uncertainty with starter Eddie Lacy and backup James Starks hobbled by injuries. The passing game, usually the teams strength, has sputtered along as quarterback Aaron Rodgers is off to the worst start of his career.Largely because of the passing games struggles, Green Bay enters Week 6 ranked 12th in scoring and 25th in yards. The numbers arent pretty, but coach Mike McCarthy remains confident the offense will improve. Its usually one or two or three plays that can define your overall performance -- or the perception of the performance, McCarthy said on Wednesday. So, were in tune with that. We understand it. This is a process. This is a long year. Weve done some good things throughout our football team, but were well aware of not only why were doing things, but how were doing things and what we need to do to get better. That starts with getting the Rodgers-led passing game back in gear.Rodgers ranks seventh in NFL history in completion rate, but is ranked last this season with a rate of 56.3 percent. Nobody, however, is pushing the panic button. This is the game of football. Hes not going to roll it out there every day and be perfect and be Superman, quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt said on Thursday.I think the standards have been set and he set them. Hes played some fantastic football and he will play fantastic football moving forward. Just right now, were in a little bit of a lull.Rodgers didnt seem worried, either, joking on Wednesday that maybe he shouldnt throw it away as much and take more sacks to boost his completion rate. You know what, Ive got to be more acccurate, and I will, Rodgers said. Discount Nike Air Max Shoes. Weve got to make the most of the opportunities on 50-50 balls and the balls we should catch and complete.Getting Rodgers and the passing game on track could be critical against the Cowboys because of the uncertainty in the backfield.Lacy had limited participation for a second consecutive day because of an ankle injury that he got in the third quarter against the New York Giants.Lacy, who ranks fifth in the NFL in yards per carry, said he did only individual drills until the medical staff shut him down for the rest of Thursdays practice in hopes of getting him ready for Sunday.Thats what were shooting for, Lacy said. Hopefully, Im able to get out there and play.Added running backs coach Ben Sirmans: You never know until we get to the game, but I think hes going to be fine. Not only is Starks dealing with a knee injury, but hes not with the team. McCarthy said Starks will be out of town until Saturday as he deals with a death in the family. Could Starks even help on Sunday?Well answer those questions once we get to that point, McCarthy said. The only other running back on the team is Don Jackson, an undrafted rookie whos on the practice squad.Game notes The Packers released No. 3 quarterback Joe Callahan, an undrafted rookie from Division III Wesley. A corresponding roster move was not made, but the Packers could use it to bolster their depth at running back or activate defensive tackle Mike Pennel or cornerback Demetri Goodson, who are practicing after serving four-game suspensions. To play on Sunday, they must be activated by 4 p.m. Saturday.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
OAKLAND, Calif. Wholesale Soccer Jerseys . -- Steve Kerr fully expects NBA players to take up their own version of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernicks stand against racial oppression.Whether his own Golden State players show some kind of support or opt to protest during the national anthem once the season begins, he isnt sure. That will be a topic of discussion as a team this training camp for the Warriors, and the reigning NBA Coach of the Year already has had discussions with a few of his players individually about the issue and shared his personal thoughts. No matter what side of the spectrum youre on, I would hope every American is disgusted with what is going on around the country, what just happened in Tulsa ... with Terence Crutcher, said Kerr, who also has been outspoken on the issue of gun control given that his father, Malcolm, was murdered while he was the American University president in Beirut when Kerr was 18 and a freshman at the University of Arizona. It doesnt matter what side youre on the Kaepernick stuff, youd better be disgusted about the things that are happening.Kerr, whose Warriors won an NBA championship in his first season as coach then finished runner-up to LeBron James and Cleveland in June, will be challenged to blend his new team right away with Kevin Durant joining two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry and fellow All-Stars and Durants U.S. gold-medal winning Olympic teammates, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. And Kerr encourages his players to talk about social issues far beyond the basketball court -- and speak up for what they believe in when done carefully. Our guys have already been asked a lot about it. Its a tricky topic, not the Kaepernick situation but just social activism in general, Kerr said Wednesday. It has to come from the heart. Theres a lot of fans out there that say, `Stick to sports, were trying to get away from all this by watching your team play, and I understand that. On the other hand, these guys do have a voice. As long as the message is clear, Im all for people speaking out against injustice. Whatever form that takes, if its non-violent and it leads to conversation, then I think thats a good thing.Kerr has paid close attention to Kaepernick, who said Tuesday he has received death threats for his decision to kneel through the anthem. But Kaepernick also has made a point that he supports military members and is speaking out against police brutality and shootings of African-Americans.I would think that something similar will happen in the NBA, Kerr said. Nobody has to be right, nobody has to be wrong. I would hope that everybody sort of respects each others point of view. There are valid points of view on both sides. ... I understand people who are offended by his stance, maybe they have a military family member who is offended or maybe they lost somebody in a war and that flag or the anthem means a lot more to them than someone else. Then you flip it around and what about non-violent protests? Its America, this is what our countrys about, its non-violent protesting. Thats what it should be about.Like many others who have supported Kaepernick even if they might disagree with his methods, Kerr appreciates how the quarterback has opened up an important conversation in this country. We like to talk about stuff, basketball or not, and I think its probably one of the best things thats come out of the Kaepernick issue is that people are talking, Kerr said. MIAMI -- LeBron James has been here before, with dire results. It was two years ago, the end of the first season of "Big Three" basketball in Miami. The situation: Heat down 3-2, hosting Game 6 of the NBA Finals, only two home wins separating them from what would have been James first title. Then, thud. James had six turnovers in Game 6, the Heat were outscored by 24 with him on the floor, and the Dallas Mavericks became NBA champions. And now, here comes a chance to face the same situation. Down 3-2 again, and back at home for Game 6 of the finals against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night, Miami needs two wins in three days or else it will be watching someone else end this season with a party on its own floor. "Were going to see if were a better team than we were our first year together," James said. Were also about to see is how much James has grown since that 2011 season. He has more at stake than any other Heat player in this series, especially now that the Spurs are one game away from grabbing the championship. If the Heat lose, itll be widely perceived as James failure. If the Heat win, his status as the games best player not only becomes even more cemented, but he might even win over a few more doubters. "Our next challenge, biggest challenge, will be Tuesday night," James said. "We have an opportunity on our home floor with our home fans to keep the series going, and we look forward to it." Getting swept in the finals by San Antonio in 2007, that one was written off as James just not having enough talent around him. Losing to Dallas in 2011, a year after he, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh came together in such ballyhooed fashion in Miami, was an absolute nightmare for James. Winning it all by topping Oklahoma City last season, that was his long-awaited ascension. And what will be written about this season, itll all be decided over the next few days. "I have to come up big, for sure in Game 6," James said. "But I believe we all have to play at a high level in order to keep the series going. So me being one of the leaders of this team, I do put a lot of pressure on myself to force a Game 7, and I look forward to the challenge." When the Heat have been in trouble the last two postseasons, its pretty much has meant James to the rescue. In matchups where the Heat have been down in a series or faced elimination over the past two seasons, the games best player has played like the games best player. Overall, in those eight games -- Game 4 against Indiana last season, Games 6 and 7 against Boston last season, Game 2 against the Thunder last season, Game 2 against Chicago this year, Game 7 against the Pacers this year and Games 2 and 4 against the Spurs -- James numbers simply pop. Hes averaged 31.1 points on 53 per cent shooting, added 10.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists, and the Heat are a whopping plus-128 with him on the floor in those contests. "LJ has proven himself enough in this league," Heat coach Erik Spooelstra said, "and on the biggest stage. Wholesale Football Jerseys. ." The Heat arent down in this series with the Spurs because of James, who was a deserved scapegoat in 2011 against the Mavericks. He has more points than anyone else in this years NBA Finals, the second-most rebounds (two behind Tim Duncan) and the most assists (one ahead of Tony Parker). Theyre down in the series for a litany of other reasons, not necessarily related to James. The Spurs might be the best top-to-bottom team that the Heat have faced in these three seasons of playoff runs. They have the mastermind coach in Gregg Popovich, the veteran core of Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili, and the supporting cast like Danny Green (with a Finals-record 25 3-pointers and counting) and Gary Neal (12 3-pointers in the series, second-most behind Green). "Well, we challenge ourselves to see if were a better team than we was," Wade said. "Same position no matter how we got to it. Were in the same position going back home with Game 6 on our home floor. So were going to see if were a better ballclub and if were better prepared for this moment. Everything happens for a reason. And this is not a bad reason at all to go home for Game 6 on your home floor." There was no outward sign of Heat dejection before leaving San Antonio on Sunday night. In a corner of the arena where players milled about with their families before departing toward the charter flight that carried the team home to Miami early Monday, Wade had a quiet moment with girlfriend Gabrielle Union, Bosh made "roar" sounds toward some kids and James stopped to give high-fives to about a half-dozen boys who barely came up to his waist, if that. He was smiling the whole time, too. If there was a "what, me worry" vibe, James was masking it well. "Weve been through so many battles," Spoelstra said. "And weve been through everything. The trust level is there now. Weve been through enough losses, weve been through enough pain, been through success that were able to manage each other much better than initially the first few weeks together." Ray Allen said he would gladly have taken the deal at the start of the year, that being have two games at home to win the NBA title. Same goes for Mario Chalmers, who insisted he couldnt wait to see what the atmosphere in Miami will be like Tuesday night. "All I know is, the schedule says weve got another game," Bosh said. That was his way of saying that no, absolutely all is not lost for Miami. And in the 2-3-2 format, on paper, it was supposed to be exactly this way. "Thats the position were in," James said. "The most important game is Game 6. We cant worry about a Game 7. We have to worry about Game 6 and going back home, being confident about our game, being confident about getting a win, which we are. So it is what it is. We have a Game 6 on our home floor." He left off the last word of that sentence: Again. ' ' '
BUFFALO, N. Wholesale Air Jordan Canada .Y. -- Five innings in a triple-A start would have been enough to give Ricky Romeros confidence a big boost. Unfortunately for the lefthander, he stuck around for the sixth. Romero showed small signs of improvement in his third start before enduring a troublesome finish as the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Charlotte Knights 8-7 in 10 innings on Tuesday. Romero walked all four batters he faced in the sixth inning -- three of which scored -- after he allowed just four hits and two walks through five innings. He did not factor into the decision as the Bisons overcame six late runs by Charlotte to win in extra innings. "Its a frustrating way to end the night," said Romero, who left with a 7-2 lead. "I put the team into a hole there, but those first five innings were pretty good." Romero admitted the battle right now is more in his mind. "Nobody takes it harder than I do," he said. "I prepare every outing as hard as I can. Its tough to sleep at night. Its more mental than physical. Its like youre fighting yourself sometimes. Im hoping I can overcome it quick." The lefthander, optioned to Buffalo by the Toronto Blue Jays on May 10 after two ineffective major league starts, threw 47 of 96 pitches for strikes, a ratio hindered by recording only four strikes in his 20-pitch sixth inning. There was no debate about whether Romero should have stayed in the game for the sixth inning. "He was fine. He had a low pitch count," Buffalo manager Marty Brown said. "Hes not a five-inning pitcher. Hes experienced a tremendous amount of success at the major league level, and now hes battling himself too much." Dustin McGowan, another erstwhile Toronto starter, made a rehab appearance and retired one of the five batters he faced in the seventh inning. He allowed three runs on two hits and two walks. Romero has allowed 35 baserunners (18 hits and 17 walks) in 12 1-3 innings with Buffalo while striking out three. His triple-A earned-run average fell to 8.76. Tuesday marked the second time in six pro starts this season that Romero logged at least five innings. He went seven frames in his season debut for single-A Dunedin on April 27. Buffalo led 7-2 when Romero was replaced, but Romero struggled with inconsistency throughout, retiring the first two batters in four of the first five innings only to have the third batter reach base. In the first inning, Romeros first walk was followed by a wild pitch and an RBI single. In innings 2, 3 and 5, he yielded two-out doubles but rebounded to record the final out. While Romero had a three-ball count on 11 of the 24 batters he faced, there was one facet of a classic Romero start: he recorded 10 outs via ground balls and only two via fly balls. "It shows that my four-seamer and sinker were working," Romero said. "The big thing is to try to focus on the positives and not the negatives. As frustrating as it is, I have to get ready to work the next time." Miesha Tate has never been one to back down from a challenge. Discount Nike React Ireland .So when the UFC womens bantamweight champion was asked for the exact reason she accepted a title defense against Amanda Nunes -- a dangerous opponent lacking a crossover name -- for Saturdays UFC 200 card, Tate never broke stride.I took this fight because the UFC called me up and asked me if I would fight and I said yes, Tate said. Its as simple as that. There was no mention of any other names. While its fair to assume the irony of Tates situation isnt lost on her, its certainly worth mentioning.Four months ago, Holly Holm faced heavy scrutiny from UFC brass for electing to make her first title defense against Tate instead of waiting for a big-money rematch against Ronda Rousey later this year. Holms gamble backfired dramatically, as Tate rallied in Round 5 to take her title by submission at UFC 196.The fallout played out like a soap opera, as UFC president Dana White publicly blamed Holms manager Lenny Fresquez for taking a risk. Fresquez went on to suggest that Tate was offered an immediate rematch with Holm and turned it down, which Tate denied.Whichever side you believe, Tate (18-5) now finds herself in a position that is eerily similar to that of Holm in March. One year after it appeared Rousey had all but cleaned out the division, bantamweight is red-hot, as Holms upset win against Rousey in November effectively leveled the playing field. The aftermath presented Tate, fresh off her title win, with a number of potential options, including a third bout with Rousey, rematches with Holm or Cat Zingano, and a catchweight fight against Cris Cyborg Justino, fresh off her UFC debut in May at 140 pounds. In the end, Tate accepted a quick turnaround against Nunes (12-4), a dangerous striker and well-rounded threat who is riding a three-fight win streak. The only thing different from Holms situation is that Tate retained the full support of the UFC despite taking a similar risk that Holm had months earlier.Ronda was clearly not able to fight, and I dont know why they didnt have me fight Holly, Tate said. There were speculations that her management were not really on the greatest terms with UFC. I dont know that. I cant comment. But I wasnt asked for any other fight than Amanda.Tate, 29, was quick to point out that she has never been one to pick and choose opponents, saying that UFC matchmakers have a job to do, which is make fights. I just say yes. I picked this fight because it was offered to me.Matchmaker Sean Shelby recently explained the decision on a UFC-produced preview show. Its pretty easy, Shelby said. Amanda has the best win streak in the division, and she is very dangerous. Shes arguably the best stand-up fighter in the division. She can take anybody out within one round.Theres little debate regarding the danger that Nunes, 28, brings to the table. The native of Brazil is 5-1 since her UFC debut in 2013 with four first-round finishes. The only knock on her thus far has been her stamina, which was stretched in a third-round TKO loss to Zingano in 2014, as well as Nunes latest win, a unanimous decision against?Valentina Shevchenko in March. That presents an interesting dynamic to the fight. Tate, often a slow starter, hasnt seen a fight go less than three rounds since 2012. The explosive Nunes, meanwhile, has gone the distance only once (in a 2013 loss to Sarah DAlelio) before joining the UFC and enters the first scheduled five-round fight of her career Saturday.I think Im definitely battle-tested, and Ive proven that, Tate said. Every time that I fight I am prepared to go all five rounds if necessary.Nunes, who has chosen her words carefully in recent weeks, hasnt lacked for confidence. She glared at Tate during the UFC 200 news conference in April, boldly exclaiming, I have all the tools to beat you, and I will show you on July 9.A major part of Nunes platform has been her belief that Tates victory against Holm, in which she trailed on the scorecards entering the final round, had more to do with Holms lack of execution.Everybody knows about Mieshas ground game. I knew that fight was going to happen like that, Nunes said. I said to my friend that night, If Miesha can take her down, I know she is going to submit her. And it happened. Holly made a mistake. She was scared of the ground game the entire fight, and Miesha got her.Tate has taken issue with the idea that the title changed hands because of Holms mistake, believing instead that she capitalized on an opportunity.I took her down and put the kind of pressure on her that forced her to either stay underneath me and take a beating or get up and leave herself open, Tate said. That was the two choices that I gave her. In the second round, she stayed underneath me because she didnt want to give up the choke, and I beat her up 10-8 in that round. In the fifth round, she didnt want to stay underneath, so she gave up the choke. I dont think it was her making a mistake as much as me giving her no other option. Its that opportunistic side of Tates personality that makes her so exciting to watch, leaving little surprise that she was willing to risk future headlining roles by facing Nunes. But the other side of the argument is interesting. While the idea of sitting idle and waiting for Rousey to return is a difficult one for a fighter of Tates makeup, a big-money third fight between the two makes sense only if Tate has the title considering Rousey owns two convincing wins against her.The subject of whether Rousey would be next is one that Tate isnt willing to consider, at least not until she gets past Nunes. Tate went as far as intercepting a question about Rousey before it was even finished during a recent media conference call.Im going to stop you right there because there is no way Im looking past this fight with Amanda, Tate said. I just cant afford it. Ive been seeing that a lot of people are losing titles quickly and focusing on things they dont need to be. I refuse to make that mistake. I didnt get here by overlooking opponents, and Amanda is a very tough one.If it appears that Tate is shouldering the burden of added pressure entering this fight, she very much is. Like Holm before her, Tate is taking a gamble on herself.I feel like there is a lot of pressure on me, but the thing that I really like about that is I know it, I accept it and I think that I really thrive under pressure, Tate said. I put myself in these situations out of my own choice. Im not here because of any other reasons, and no one is forcing me. Im here because I like putting pressure on me because I know I perform the best under pressure.I think I was meant to be a champion. Nasir survived a caught-behind chance off the second ball of the over, despite getting an inside edge, which ricocheted off the thigh pad to Anamul Haque, the wicketkeeper.
